Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for the County High Schools of Alabama: Containing Rules and Regulations, Courses of Study, Adopted Texts, Treatment of the Several Subjects in the Curricula In furtherance of the spirit that has been implicit both in the conception and the preparation of this manual, it is confidently expected that the faculties of all the county high schools in the State will give themselves largely to extension work in behalf of the rural schools. A number of our county high schools have had sessions on Saturday and closed their doors on Monday in order that the teachers might visit rural schools in the county while in actual session, thereby rendering con crete assistance at the most opportune time and in the most helpful way. To those who look out on Alabama's needs with any con structive policy for betterment, community organization looms large as the most hopeful avenue of relief. The individ ual community, however, will make slow, if any, progress without intelligent direction and cooperation. Each rural school is the common property of the community and the only agency that can lay claim to the undivided love and support of its members. Rural teachers must learn from the attitude and service of county high school teachers that they have unfailing friends who know and will to help them in this work of social and community uplift. We may be sure that rural teachers can never be taught to believe it so long as those who work in county high schools display an aloofness and a narrowness which limit their activity to the walls of the schoolroom or the boundaries of the town in which the high school may be lo cated. Wherever such a policy has prevailed, the people have come gradually to rely upon the general government for the performance of duties that should be regard ed as individual or local. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Reform and a New Constitution: Before the Society of the Alumni of the University of Alabama, at Tusca-Loosa, June 2, 1914 Mr. Toastmaster: The annual banquet of this association is not a mere social function where friendships are renewed and the pleasures of the festal-board enjoyed. More important than its social features, is the fact that it gathers together in annual council the friends of the University, to consider its interests, discuss its problems and promote its welfare. At these annual banquets, we renew our loyalty and increase our zeal in the service of our Alma Mater. Those who gather here are largely the leaders of educational thought in the State, and hence, these annual meetings constitute a potent force in making for progress and the formation of a sound opinion as to our educational conditions and needs. Under the wise administration of Dr. Denny, the University has made steady progress. During the past two years the enrollment of students has increased from three hundred and ninety to six hundred and eighteen, and considering the resources at his command no other American college is able to furnish a record more brilliant. Yet, as Dr. Denny truthfully states "without additional teaching force and dormitories we have about reached the limit of our progress." In his admirable and masterly report, which will be presented to the Board of Trustees on tomorrow, Dr. Denny states that "I find the amount of money unconditionally appropriated to the University under fixed statutes materially smaller than is the case in any other tax-supported University in the nation." What, then, is the cause of this condition? Is there no remedy? Has the State reached the limit of its resources in providing for the needs of our higher institutions of learning? If so, further discussion would be unnecessary, but I am unable to reach such a conclusion. No State in the South possesses such unrivaled resources as Alabama. It is to-day a wealthy and prosperous commonwealth, and the possibilities of future development in industrial and agricultural fields are almost without limit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Newspaper Articles Regarding the Educational Situation and Other Civic Matters in the Southern States, Alabama in Particular William H. Skaggs, formerly a prominent citizen of Alabama, but now of Chicago, has written to The age-herald an appalling indictment of the South's educational conditions. That it may be known that there is no sectional prejudice in what Mr. Skaggs writes, it should be stated that he was born and reared in Talladega and was three times mayor of that city before taking up his residence in Chicago. He writes as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
