Download or read book Building for Democracy written by James W MacNutt and published by Formac Publishing Company Limited. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legislative buildings are the most important public structures in the provincial capitals of Halifax, Charlottetown and Fredericton. Each was built to communicate ideals, ideas and arrangements of government unique to these three provinces. In Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, these buildings were built to house colonial governments where a popular assembly was matched with an appointed council of local notables, advising an all-powerful governor appointed by Westminister and representing the British crown. Over the years they have been modified as the structure of provincial governments have changed to a single elected legislative assembly with full provincial powers. Fredericton's legislature, built in 1882, is a bold and beautiful building with unmatched interior features. This book tells the fascinating story of why each building was designed as it was, and the styles and ideas their designers drew upon. Author James Macnutt takes the reader on a tour of all three buildings, with text and visuals highlighting their many features and details.

Book Synopsis The Government of Nova Scotia by : James Murray Beck
Download or read book The Government of Nova Scotia written by James Murray Beck and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1957-12-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a well-documented study of the structure, historical development, and present condition of the government of Nova Scotia. It deals with one of the oldest constitutions in Canada, one which was not created by statute but by the prerogative of the Crown. Nova Scotia has two major claims to priority in the history of Canadian politics: she was the first province to be granted representative institutions and the first to win responsible government. Owing in large measure to Joseph Howe's inspired leadership, the latter was achieved through peaceful, constitutional means. It is obvious that a study of the government of Nova Scotia must dig deep into the past, and Dr. Beck has investigated this early history with great care and thoroughness. This is followed by a study of the more recent period and the working of the government of our own time. The author demonstrates that the important changes, the interesting practices, and the colourful incidents have not all been in the distant past. There was, for example, the Legislative Council, that travesty on democratic institutions which lasted until less than thirty years ago. There was the odd phenomenon of a Liberal government in power for seventy out of ninety years since Confederation. There was the constant need to adapt parliamentary practices and institutions, developed under quite different conditions to the needs of a much smaller community, and one which was keenly aware of its heritage and very jealous of any serious interference. As a native of Nova Scotia and a political scientist, Dr. Beck has had a special interest in seeing how the Nova Scotian institutions of government evolved and how they work today. He has done a great deal of original research among primary sources and covered a field as yet uninvestigated by any other scholar. An admirable addition to the Canadian Government Series, of which it is the eighth volume, this is a book for serious students of political science and for students of Nova Scotia history.
Download or read book On Their Shoulders written by Grace Evans and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nova Scotia elected its first representative government in 1758. It was over 200 years later that the first woman, Gladys Porter, would take her seat at Province House. On Their Shoulders: The Women Who Paved the Way in Nova Scotia Politics tells the stories of the first fifty women to serve as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), detailing their journeys to office, the inequalities they overcame, the moments and achievements they are proud of, and the advice they give to today's young women. Co-authors Sarah Dobson and Grace Evans interviewed women who have served as an MLA in Nova Scotia, as well as the families of those who have since passed away. This book is a historic recollection of Nova Scotian politics with a gendered lens, filling an important gap in our history while inspiring young women to follow in their footsteps. The book began as an idea for a fundraiser, but became so much more. Alongside a successful crowdfunding campaign, the sales of this book will go towards the Women in Politics Scholarship at Dalhousie University. This scholarship will support the next generation of women-identifying students who aspire to a career in politics.
