Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monroe County, Michigan, Vol. 2: A Narrative Account of Its Historical Progress, Its People, and Its Principal Interests Benjamin dansard, sr. One of the honored pioneers of Monroe county who long wielded a distinctive influence in connection with busi ness and civic activities in this favored section of the state was the late Benjamin Dansard, Sr., who settled in the city of Monroe in 1836, the year prior to the admission of Michigan as one of the sovereign states of the Union, and who here continued to reside until his death, more than half a century later. He was the founder of the banking house which still perpetuates his name and was recognized as a man of fine business ability, the while his urbane and kindly personality gained for him the confidence and high regard of all with whom he came in contact. He did much to foster industrial and civic development and progress in Monroe county, was a man of signal refinement and culture, and left an indelible impress upon the community in which he long maintained his home and in which his memory is held in enduring memory. Benjamin Dansard was born in Issoudun, France, September 12, 1813, and was thus seventy-five years of age at the time of his death, January 27, 1888. In his native land he was afforded the best of educa tional advantages, as it was the desire of his father that he should enter the priesthood of the Catholic church. Upon attaining to maturity, how ever, he decided that his tastes and predilections lay along other lines than those of an ecclesiastical order, and he was a young man when he came to America to win for himself a place of independence in connection with business activities. In 1836, when about twenty-four years of age, Mr. Dansard came to Monroe, and here he was engaged in the dry goods business for a number of years. In the early days he gave instruction in the French language to a number of classes, as he was a man of fine scholarship and especially well qualified for teaching in his native tongue. It may be noted that his first pupil was Dr. Osgood, who at tained to wide fame in the west through the introduction of Osgood 's Cholagogue, a remedy designed as a specific for all the prevalent fever and ague. CHAPTER XVI IN THE MEXICAN WAR Rupture Over Texas--United States Claims Unsettled--American Troops Move To The Frontier--War Declared--Response Of Michigan And Monroe County--Soldiers From Monroe County. One of the most important topics which claimed the attention of the administration of President James Knox Polk, the tenth President of the United States, was the annexation of Texas. On the last day of his official term, his predecessor, President John Tyler, had sent a messenger to the Texan government with a copy of the joint resolutions of the American congress in favor of annexation. These were considered by a convention of delegates called for the purpose of forming a state constitution for Texas; that body approved of the measure by resolution on July 4, 1845; on that day Texas became one of the states of the American union. Rupture Over Texas As had been foreseen and predicted, this act caused an immediate rupture between the United States and Mexico; for the latter claimed Texas as a part of its territory; notwithstanding the fact that its independence had been acknowledged by the United States, England, France and other governments. On March 6. 1845, congress had adopted the joint resolution for the admission of Texas into the union, General Almonto, the Mexican minister at Washington formerly protested against that measure and demanded his passports. On the 4th of June following, General Herrera, President of Mexico, issued a proclamation declaring the rights of Mexico and his determination to defend them--by arms, if . necessary. United States Claims Unsettled But independent of the cause complained of, there already existed a cause for serious disputes between the United States and Mexico. Ever since the establishment of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monroe County Michigan, Vol. 1: A Narrative Account of Its Historical Progress, Its People, and Its Principal Interests It is impossible to think of a country founded by such men as becoming anything else than great, powerful, indomitable, so long as it adhered to the principles, the virtues, the spirit of these men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, Monroe County offers a rich tapestry of history for those willing to look. French-Canadian settlers left behind legends of monsters, ghosts, and witches. In war time, the community answered the call to arms with more soldiers per capita than any other county in the nation and proved a suitable hometown to take refuge between gun shots from none other than George Armstrong Custer. Like most communities, its sordid past reveals crimes and tragedies--including body snatching. More recently, a partial nuclear meltdown brought the city to the brink of disaster, but Monroe not only survived but now thrives. Join local author Shawna Lynn Mazur for a trip through little-known and forgotten parts of Monroe County's past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Van Buren County, Michigan, Vol. 2: A Narrative Account of Its Historical Progress, Its People, and Its Principal Interests, Illustrated Mr. Warner is a native of Van Buren county and has passed the whole of his life within its borders, except during the period of his military service. He was born on a farm in Almena township on December 14, 1840, and is a son of Rev. Junia and Arminda (merry) Warner, natives of Herkimer county, New York. They came to Michigan and located on the Van Buren county farm in 1835, the place of their son Jerome's birth. On their arrival in this county they entered three hundred acres of land belonging to the government and on that they made their home and bestowed their labor until the death of the father in 1847. After this event the mother remained on the farm and continued cultivating it and rearing her children to usefulness in life by having them perform their full share of the work in conducting it. She survived him thirty-six years, surrendering her trust at the behest of the Great Disposer of Events in 1883. Nine children were born in the family, three of whom died in infancy and four of the others have since died, the latter being Philura, Elam L., Francis and Mary. The two still living are Jerome C. And his brother Wilbur F., who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Both were educated in the district schools and reared on the farm. Both have also sought other pur suits in life and have won gratifying and well-deserved success in them. Jerome C. Warner remained on the farm until 1864. On Jan uary 1, that year, he enlisted in Company H, Thirteenth Michigan Infantry, as a volunteer to fight for the preservation of the Union. This company was connected with the army corps commanded by General Sherman and he remained in active service until the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina when he was Wounded and removed to a hospital in New York city, where he remained about three months, or until the fall of the Southern Confederacy and the close of the war, being discharged in June, 1865. When he left the army he returned to the farm and conducted its operations for a short time. Finally he sold it and moved to Paw Paw, where for a number of years he was extensively and profitably engaged in merchandising, which business is now carried on by his sons. He now owns one of the largest and most imposing brick business buildings and one of the most attractive and valuable private resi dences in the city. He also owns one hundred and thirty acres of fine farming land, which he has purchased since he became a mer chant and to the cultivation of which he gives his personal atten tion to the extent of. Supervising and directing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Real Custer takes a good hard look at the life and storied military career of George Armstrong Custer—from cutting his teeth at Bull Run in the Civil War, to his famous and untimely death at Little Bighorn in the Indian Wars. Author James Robbins demonstrates that Custer, having graduated last in his class at West Point, went on to prove himself again and again as an extremely skilled cavalry leader. Robbins argues that Custer's undoing was his bold and cocky attitude, which caused the Army's bloodiest defeat in the Indian Wars. Robbins also dives into Custer’s personal life, exploring his letters and other personal documents to reveal who he was as a person, underneath the military leader. The Real Custer is an exciting and valuable contribution to the legend and history of Custer that will delight Custer fans as well as readers new to the legend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a historic battlefield site is discovered and studied, the focus is often on the “hardware”: remnants of weaponry, ammunition, supplies, and equipment that archaeologists carefully unearth, analyze, conserve, and frequently place on display in museums. But what about the “software”? What can archaeology teach us about the humans involved in the conflict: their social mores and cultural assumptions; their use and understanding of power? In The Archaeology of Engagement: Conflict and Revolution in the United States, Dana L. Pertermann and Holly K. Norton have assembled a collection of studies that includes sites of conflicts between groups of widely divergent cultures, such as Robert E. Lee's mid-1850s campaign along the Concho River and the battles of the River Raisin during the War of 1812. Notably, the second half of the book applies the editors’ principles of conflict event theory to the San Jacinto Battlefield in Texas, forming a case study of one of America's most storied—and heavily trafficked—battle sites.
