Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monmouth County, New Jersey, 1664-1920, Vol. 2: Historical, Biographical, Illustrated Upper Freehold is in the extreme southwestern portion of the county, Millstone being the only township which adjoins it, and forms its northern and northeastern boundary. The other bounds are: On the southeast, Ocean county; on the southwest, Burlington county; on the northwest, Mercer county. The streams all flow in a general north westerly direction, the largest of these being Crosswicks creek, which with its tributary, Lahaway creek, flows across the southwestern corner of the township. Doctor creek runs through the central part and amtes with Indian creek, forming part of the northwestern boundary between Mercer county. Assanpink creek marks a part of the northern boundary between Millstone township. The Pemberton and Hightstown railroad (now operated by the Pennsylvania system) traverses the township from north to south. The original formation of the township is not on record, but it is known that it was laid out prior to 1731. An assessment roll of the township for that year is in existence, showing that it was one of the four original townships, the collector being John Lawrence, who was the township assessor for years, the surveyor-general who in 1743 ran the line since known as the Lawrence Line, between the Provinces of East and West Jersey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Monmouth County, New Jersey: Illustrated To the general matter pertaining to the county, is added a history of each of its townships, embracing accounts of churches, schools, societies, and other local organizations, and also special matters intended chiefly for reference. Other portions of the work are necessarily arranged according to the subjects of which they treat. A prominent feature of the work is the mention of early settlers, and of the families descended from them. In this connection it is proper to remark that the family names of many of the pioneers and later residents of Monmouth county have been found spelled differently, (and sometimes in as many as three or four different ways), in the county, township and church records; and for that reason it has often been found impossible to decide with any degree of certainty, on the correct orthography, - if, indeed, there is any choice' as to correctness, where, as is not infrequently the case in this county, different members of the same family, spell their surname variously, each in his own way. Under such circumstances, it should not be thought strange if the writer, being wholly at a. Loss to know which manner of spelling to adopt, has sometimes chosen one which may be regarded as incorrect by some who bear the name. Beyond this explanation, no apology will be made, for none is thought to be necessary. It is of course impossible to produce a history which shall be absolutely perfect and complete, but every effort has been used to make this as nearly so as possible, and it is now presented, with full confidence that the verdict of its patrons will be one of approval. He was elected twice, and at his election in 1902 he ran nine hundred votes ahead of his ticket, and at his reelection in 1907 he was eighteen hundred votes ahead of his ticket. During the period of the vvorld - wide War, Peter Francis Daly, through the profoundly efficient discharge of the broad and varied duties Of his high official county position - made abnormally onerous and exact ing by the extraordinary conditions of the times; through his distinctive genius in the work of organizing popular movements, his tireless energy, his stirring eloquence and his strong hold upon the imagination and good will of the people and their admiration for the intensity and zeal of his Americanism, was indisputably the most Outstanding leader and chief spokesman of America's cause in this county of one hundred and sixty-eight thousand people and which embraces within its confines so many different racial strains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Dutch Settlers of Monmouth County, New Jersey When the publication of these articles on the Early Dutch Settlers of Monmouth was begun in The Freehold Transcript. I had no idea they would develop to such length. Several of the articles written for the weekly issues of this newspaper read all right therein, but now, gathered together in book form, they appear fragmentary and disconnected. A great deal of time and labor by more than one person has been devoted to gathering material from public records, family papers, tombstone inscriptions, and other original sources of information. Much of this is comprised in short notes and small type, and, by putting these compilations in book form they will be accessible for reference. For there is much work to be done before a full genealogy can be written of either the Conover, Hendrickson, or Schanck families. The illustrations are chiefly old dwelling houses erected by the early settlers or their sons. The buildings are disappear ing before the march of improvement and the decay of time, and in another generation not one will probably be left. Some are of the Dutch style of architecture, others of the English, but they show the radical difference of the two races in character. I have been unable to procure the likeness of any of our pioneer settlers, and therefore was compelled to select persons of the present generation, who bear in form or features a strong family resemblance to their parental ancestors. These selec tions have been made by myself, and solely for the above reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shark River District, Monmouth County, New Jersey: And Genealogies of Chambers, Corlies Drummond, Morris, Potter, Shafto Webley and White Sir Henry Hudson, in the Half Moon, in the latter part of August, 1609, left Delaware bay, and on Sept. 2 passed Barnegat inlet, then unnamed, and anchored for the night along the Jersey coast, probably off the site of the present Asbury Park. At 5 o'clock we anchored, being light wind, and rode in eight fathoms of water, the night was fair. This night I found the land to have the com pass eight degrees. Far to the northward we saw high hills; for the day before we found not above two degrees of variation. - Log of the Half Moon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ellis Index by Norma Lippincott Swan to the History of Monmouth County, New Jersey Miss Swan collected old mantels and her articles on mantels and on remodeling old houses appeared in many magazines. She was a zealous gardener and trained a young boy to do the work of caring for her flowers, berries and vegetables. Miss Dorothy lngling of Red Bank who supplied some of the information about Miss Swan knew her well and said that she was a woman of indomitable spirit, and that when she could no longer hold a pencil, she continued her work by dictating to a stenographer. After Miss lngling introduced Miss Swan to the Rev. Dr. Ralph Washington Sockman, he preached a sermon about Miss Swan over Radio Station nbc and told of her influence in the community and her aliveness in spite of her handicap. Dr. Peter J. Guthorn, M.D., of Brielle, a Monmouth County historian, and a very great admirer of Miss Swan, contributed to this brief biography.
