We had been making history for more than a half century. During a considerable portion of this period the country was new, society unsettled, and records imperfectly kept. Much needed information was treasured in the memory of persons far advanced in life, and widely dispersed over our vast country. It was often difficult to find them, and, when found, their recollections were not always the same. Much dis crimination was needed to balance up. Besides, it was not easy to get desired and available information from those in the active work. Circulars were sent to the pastors, with blanks to be filled and returned. More than two-thirds of the pastors failed to respond. This was very embarrassing. To bring order out of chaos is difficuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Racine, Wisconsin: With a Preliminary Chapter Devoted to the City of Racine, 1836 to 1912 This book contains a history of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Racine, \vis., or so much of it as we have been able to gather from records, documents, correspondence, and conversations with people whose memory goes beyond the records we have. It is a fact to be deplored that, so far as we have been able to discover, there are no records covering the period from the organization of our church in 1836 until the year 1855; for the first nine teen years, therefore, we have been obliged to depend upon the minutes of the annual Conferences; upon the memory of the very few people who were here during those years; and upon the meagre items of information contained in some published historical sketches of the church, in histories of Racine, to which we have had access. The disappearance of our records is attributed to the fire which destroy ed our church building in 1882. While there are very few people now living, who were members of our church in pioneer days, it is a remarkable circumstance, that two of its foun ders should still survive - Mr. Alanson 1719 Orrington Ave., Evanston, Ill., and Mrs. Lucy Foxwell, of Yorkville, Racine Wis. We have talked repeatedly with these people, and the information we have gotten from them, is important and interesting, if not voluminous. It is also a remarkable fact, and worthy of mention, in passing, that Mr. Filer and Mrs. Foxwell are the only people now living, so far as diligent in quiry can establish, who were residents of Racine in 1837, and it is interest ing to us, however it may strike others, to know that the only survivors of that early day in Racine should be two Methodists. We refrain, however, from taking any advantage of the opportunity to moralize. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The History of Wisconsin, Volume II written by Richard N. Current and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the History of Wisconsin series introduces us to the first generation of statehood, from the conversion of prairie and forests into farmland to the development of cities and industry. In addition, this volume presents a synthesis of the Civil War and Reconstruction era in Wisconsin. Scarcely a decade after entering the Union, the state was plunged into the nationwide debate over slavery, the secession crisis, and a war in which 11,000 "Badger Boys in Blue" gave their lives. Wisconsin's role in the Civil War is chronicled, along with the post-war years. Complete with photographs from the Historical Society's collections, as well as many pertinent maps, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in this era of Wisconsin's history.
Book Synopsis The Oneida Indian Experience by : Jack Campisi
Download or read book The Oneida Indian Experience written by Jack Campisi and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1988-10-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary scholarship and Indian oral tradition come together in this unique account of the history and culture of the Oneida Iroquois—particularly the Wisconsin Oneidas—who have not been the subject of the intense scholarly attention accorded other Iroquois groups. Contributors include Oneida educators, community leaders, historians, anthropologists, and linguists; essays vary from accounts of personal experience and oral history to presentations of academic research. The common denominator is the Oneida experience of cultural change and survival. Part I focuses on the history and adaptations of the Oneidas in their New York homeland. Part II describes the motives and methods used by New York State officials in divesting the Oneidas of their New York home and explores the aftereffects of the Indians' removal to Wisconsin and the legal implications of allotment legislation on American Indians' tribal jurisdiction today. Nineteenth-century attempts by whites to take the Oneidas' Wisconsin land base forced the Indians to develop strategies for survival, described in Part III. Capable leadership, the maintenance of tribal tradition, cultural revitalization, new educational initiatives, and continuing connections among the Oneida communities have fostered a tribal reemergence and have allowed the Oneidas to maintain themselves as a unique and thriving people.
