We had been making history for more than a half century. During a considerable portion of this period the country was new, society unsettled, and records imperfectly kept. Much needed information was treasured in the memory of persons far advanced in life, and widely dispersed over our vast country. It was often difficult to find them, and, when found, their recollections were not always the same. Much dis crimination was needed to balance up. Besides, it was not easy to get desired and available information from those in the active work. Circulars were sent to the pastors, with blanks to be filled and returned. More than two-thirds of the pastors failed to respond. This was very embarrassing. To bring order out of chaos is difficuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism: In Northwest Kansas The last several years of the life of William H. Sweet were devoted to the collecting of material and the writing of this volume. He very much hoped to finish the task and see the book through the press himself, but death came suddenly on January 5, 1919. He had planned to publish the book at his own expense and ask the Conference to sell it for the benefit of Kansas Wesleyan University, and before his death he had talked to his children about the plan. They accordingly now desire to carry out his desire, and the present volume is published at the expense of the heirs of William H. and Rose A. Sweet. On its completion the entire edition will be turned over to the Northwest Kansas Conference and the proceeds of the sale of the book are to go to the Kansas Wesleyan University. The manuscript has been published, practically as it was left by its author. He greatly regretted that more complete material was not forthcoming in response to his many appeals, but the book contains much material that would no doubt soon have been lost, and those, who in the future will write of pioneer days in Northwest Kansas will find here a storehouse of interesting material. The Biographical Introduction has been added, though the author did not so intend, and has been prepared by his eldest son, Dr. Paul W. Sweet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Methodism Within the Bounds of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 1 As far back as memory runs we were accustomed to sit by the knee of our venerable paternal grand mother, who was converted in Ireland under the preaching of the Rev. John Wesley, and of hearing her describe the different preachers she had heard both in Ireland and in America, and especially since she came to the West. And our excellent mother, who united with the Church in the wilderness in her sixteenth year, used ofien to relate to us the scenes she had witnessed, and describe the ministers she had heard, and the revivals of religion she had known. And then our father obtained license to preach when we were quite young, and traveled and preached extensively as a local preacher, and assisted in revi vals and in forming classes, and from him we oh tained much valuable information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Methodism in Kentucky, Vol. 1 Not seeking controversies with other denominations of Christians, but desirous to live on terms of amity and in Christian fellowship with all who love the Lord Jesus, its ministers have everywhere preached the doctrines Of the Bible, as contained in our Articles of Religion; while they have not at any time shrunk from the vindi cation Of its teachings and truths, by Whomsoever assailed. Anxious for the success of Christianity, and the exten sion of the Redeemer's kingdom, it cheerfully bids God speed to all who love the Saviour, and rejoices in the prosperity of Zion, whether in its own or in other branches of the Church Of Christ. The biographical Sketches to be found in these pages are simply sketches. They claim to be nothing more. The limits of our work, when we take into consideration the number of the ministers who have occupied this field, and have been called from labor to reward, forbid our indulging in detailed historical narrative. In many instances we desired to give more lengthened accounts Of the lives and labors of the noble men who laid the foundations Of Methodism in these western wilds, but we dared not gratify our own wishes. Ive have allowed all the space which might be considered expedient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
