Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Louisiana In presenting this History of Louisiana to the people of the State, the authors find it necessary to say a word of preface. Their intention has been to write a history that would give the children of Louisiana a simple and true account of the progress of the State from the earliest times of discovery down to the present era. It is hoped, however, that the work will not prove uninteresting to older persons as well. Every effort has been made to secure accuracy of detail; but as some errors may have crept in, the authors will be glad to receive notice of any that may meet the eye of the critic. It may be added that all the artistic and mechanical portion of the work was done in New Orleans - the book is entirely a home product. The authors desire to thank the librarians of the Fisk, the Howard, and the State Libraries for uniform courtesy and kindness in putting at their disposal the rich historical treasures from which the materials of this work are drawn. Among these treasures the authors wish to acknowledge their special obligations to the Histories of Louisiana by the Hon. Charles Gayarre and Judge Martin; to Fiske's Discovery of America; to Margry's Documents; and to the official documents relating to the French and Spanish Domination. Grateful acknowledgment is also made to E. H. Farrar, Esq., for the privilege he kindly granted of borrowing books and maps from his valuable library. The authors owe special thanks to Messrs. L. Graham & Son, printers, for the care they have taken in the execution of their share of the labor. In conclusion it is proper to state that Miss King wrote the first part of the history (as far as the end of the Spanish Domination), and that Mr. Ficklen completed it. It is not to be expected that where towns are few and large plantations are numerous the seeds of democracy will find as favorable soil as in New England townships. Moreover, the Whig platform of protection to internal industries and of subsidies. To internal improvements suited to perfection a State where each large plantation had in vested much capital in the planting and manufacture of sugar and demanded protection, and where the numerous waterways needed the aid of the Federal government for their improvement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana: A Record of Expansion Naturally, so large a theme, when compressed within the present limits, must be handled with frequent disre gard of details. Nevertheless, although the special stu dent may find little in the book that is likely to be new to him, so far as the facts are concerned, and although only a small part of the material examined and collected could be used, still the volume as it stands has been based entirely upon examination of the original sources. It had been possible occasionally to bring forward new particular facts of more or less importance to the special student, but this temptation has been set aside with a View to making the book more useful and interesting to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief History of the Louisiana Territory The extraordinary revival of interest in all sorts of information regarding the Louisiana Purchase calls for a historical manual, brief, accurate, and readable, which the extensive literature of the Territory docs not at present contain. This volume is an attempt to supply such a want. It consists of the revised copy of four lectures delivered before the Washington University Association on the Mary Hemenway Foundation. The author lays no claim to exhaustive use of original sources but has examined the wide range of literature touching upon the history of the Purchase Territory and accepted well authenticated facts wherever found. Special acknowledgments of aid and kindness are due to Miss Louise Dalton in charge of the Missouri Historical Society Library, 1600 Locust Street, and to Dean Marshall S. Snow and Chancellor Winfield S. Chaplin of Washington University. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
