Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kent County, Maryland, 1630-1916 The superintendent of the schools of Kent County, Prof. J. L. Smyth, in his long experience as a teacher and in his present position, feeling the great need of some historical data concerning our home county of Kent and its county town, Chestertown, requested the writer to compile this book, which is here presented to the public. It is hoped that it may, at least, be the foundation, or incentive, for someone to produce a book, with other data discovered and other facts recovered from the dim ages of the past. In the completion of this volume, "The History of Kent County, Maryland," we realized the enormity of the task when we began. Impressed, however, with the great need of some record in book form of even a few of Kent's historical facts, we have undertaken this work. It is based on a careful study of the means at hand and of persistent effort in exhuming facts contained in books, newspapers and articles by various writers. Among the latter to whom we are indebted are: Percy G. Skirven, who contributed the chapter on the old Court House, Caulk's Field and some P. E. Church history; Hanson's family history, Hon. James Alfred Pearce, files of the Kent News, Mrs. Harriett Hill, Swepson Earle, who furnished us six pictures of old homes, and others whom we regard as authority on the subjects discussed. Once a center of trade with Great Britain and the West Indies, the town founded in 1706 now boasts grand houses built by wealthy merchants. The town is also home to Washington College, which was founded in 1782 with the help of George Washington, making it the 10th-oldest college in the country. Chestertown residents, proud of their heritage, hold their own tea party celebration each year in remembrance of the 1774 citizens who boarded the brigantine William Geddes and tossed its cargo overboard to protest the British tea tax. This volume is meant to be its own celebration of Chestertown and Kent County's rich history.

Situated on a peninsula where the Chester and Sassafras Rivers meander into the Chesapeake Bay, Kent County boasts 209 miles of scenic shoreline. The rich history of the waterfront towns features the 1782 founding of Washington College, the only college named for George Washington with his express consent. Chestertown, the county seat, is home to Emmanuel Church, where the name of the Protestant Episcopal denomination was proposed and adopted in 1780. Tolchester Beachs many amusement rides will be remembered by generations of tourists and Kent County residents.

Book excerpt: "Kent County justly claims the honor of being the most ancient settlement, and of inheriting the oldest organized government, in the State of Maryland... The Kent settlement, i.e. Kent county, originally embraced and included the whole of the Eastern Shore, and was under the government of an officer styled the 'Commander of the Isle of Kent.'" "The early records of Kent County, Maryland, which contain the only memorials extant of many of the first settlers of the Eastern Shore, are time-worn, mouldering, falling to pieces, and in a few years will become illegible, decay, and be lost. Upon their faded and perishing pages are chronicled some of the acts and doings of good men who have gone before us-whose graves are unknown-whose tombstones have disappeared-and whose names are forgotten, or are no longer mentioned among men." To preserve this precious history, the author has "endeavoured-with the light afforded by ancient Tombstones, Wills, Parish Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths, and the assistance of friends and their family annals-to connect, genealogically, the first settlers with their children-the present generation-and to weave, as it were, a living garland around the crumbling monuments of the dead." A wealth of names and dates pepper the pages of this book. Extracts from legal documents and an index to full-names, places and subjects index add to the value of this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the golden age of the steamer, the rich bounty of the Eastern Shore was transported down the Chester River and across the Chesapeake Bay to the port of Baltimore. For over one hundred years, vessels like the Maryland, the Chester and the B.S. Ford traversed these winding waters laden with fruit, grains, crabs and oysters. For a dollar, passengers could enjoy the novelty of a ride and the slow panorama of the shoreline. Through freeze and fog, skilled captains plied the waterways until the last of the steamers--the Bay Belle--made its final passage in the 1950s. Author and historian Jack Shaum journeys back to the bygone days of the Chester River's steamboats.
