Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ipswich, Essex, and Hamilton Though the history of ancient Towns, whose population, wealth, and notoriety are less than those of a metropolis, is not of great comparative importance, yet, when faithfully written, it is a miniature likeness, in many proportions and parts, of such Towns' own County and State. A history of this kind, at least, extends a helping hand, to draw back from the current of time not a few facts, which, without being so preserved, would be speedily borne down to oblivion. When candidly examined, it may not fail to exhibit views, which are suited to interest the curiosity, to enlarge the surveys of the mind, and improve the affections of the heart. With these prefatory remarks, it may not be amiss to relate here what was known of Agawam, previously to its becoming a permanent settlement. 1614. Capt. John Smith, in his Description of North Virginia, as New-England was then called, says of Augoan or Agawam, - "Here are many rising hills, and on their tops and descents are many corne fields and delightfull groues. On the east is an Isle of two or three leagues in length; the one halfe plaine marish ground, fit for pasture, or salt ponds, with many faire high groues of mulberry trees. There are also okes, pines, walnuts, and other wood, to make this place an excellent habitation." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Vol. 2: A History of the Town From 1700 to 1917 The first volume of Ipswich history, entitled Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1633-1700, was published in 1905. It was received with so much favor that I have been encouraged to continue my study and research to the present day. To the end that the book may be interesting to many readers, beside students of history, and may be something more than a series of disconnected annals, the topical method, followed in the first volume, has been continued. I have endeavored to portray as graphically as possible the changing life of the community in successive periods, in the common course of Town affairs and in critical periods of Colonial and National existence, and have not hesitated to make frequent excursions into the contemporaneous history of other towns to secure illustrative material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Greeks, Romans, and Pilgrims David Lupher examines the availability, circulation, and uses of Greek and Roman culture in the earliest period of the British settlement of New England. This book offers the first systematic correction to the dominant assumption that the Separatist settlers of Plymouth Plantation (the so-called “Pilgrims”) were hostile or indifferent to “humane learning”— a belief dating back to their cordial enemy, the May-pole reveler Thomas Morton of Ma-re Mount, whose own eccentric classical negotiations receive a chapter in this book. While there have been numerous studies of the uses of classical culture during the Revolutionary period of colonial North America, the first decades of settlement in New England have been neglected. Utilizing both familiar texts such as William Bradford’s Of Plimmoth Plantation and overlooked archival sources, Greeks, Romans, and Pilgrims signals the end of that neglect.

This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony I have tried to tell, accurately but in readable fashion, the Story of the builders of our Town: their homes and home life, their employments, their Sabbath keeping, their love of learning, their administration of Town affairs, their sterndelusions, and their heroism, in War and in resistance to Tyranny. The seventeenth century was a brilliant and thrilling period in Ipswich history, and it seemed best to me to consider it some what at length, and to close my historical study with the end Of that century rather than to attempt a briefer summary of the complete history of the Town. If this work finds favor, I shall begin at once to gather material for another volume, in which the historical and topographical studies will be carried on to completion. NO attempt has been made to construct a genealogical appendix. The magnitude Of the undertaking, properly carried out, seemed too great, and the forthcoming publication of the Vital statistics'of the Town, by the Essex Institute, renders it unnecessary. In Part Two, however, a topographical study has been made, from the beginning to the present generation. Nearly two thousand citations from the County Records have been carefully verified, and the likelihood of error has been reduced to the lowest possible degree.
