Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 4: As Told by Its Own Historians, the Muhammadan Period Of the Extracts from the Autobiography of Babar little need be' said. These Memoirs are the best memorials of the life and reign of the frank and jovial conqueror; they are ever fresh, and will long continue to be read with interest and pleasure. To have passed th'ese over on the ground of their previous publication would have left a blank in this work which no other writer could supply. Who but himself could have so fully and openly described his aims and feelings, or who could have exhibited that adaptability of character and that ready appreciation of the manners and prejudices of his new subjects? All the important passages relating to India have therefore been extracted from Leyden and Erskine's translation, and they will be the more acceptable since the original work has now become scarce and dear. A new French translation by M. Pavet de Courteille from Babar's own Turkl' version of the Memoirs made its appearance just in time to furnish materials; for a few notes and com parisons; but the differences between the translations from the Persian and Turki versions are not so great as might have been expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 4 of 4 One of the first consequences of the treaty of Poonah, as it bore upon the relative situation of the English and of the native powers, displayed itself in a fresh arrangement into which the Presidency of Bombay judged it expedient to enter with the Guickwar. The contingent heretofore furnished by that prince for the defence of Guzerat had proved to be in every respect inadequate. He was now required, in consideration of an exemption from foreign tribute, to increase his available force by a thousand infantry, and two regiments of cavalry. Every investigator must before all things look upon himself as one who is summoned to serve on a jury. He has only to consider how far the statement Of the case is complete and clearly set forth by the evidence. Then he draws his conclusion and gives his vote, whether it be that his Opinion coincides with that Of the foreman or not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Indian Philosophy, Vol. 4: Indian Pluralism The third volume of the present series was published in 1940. The manuscript of the fourth volume was largely ready at that time and it would have been possible to send it for publication at least by 1942. But the second world-war commenced in 1939 and although the Cambridge University Press was prepared to accept the manuscript even during war-time, the despatch of the manu script from Calcutta to Cambridge and the transmission of proofs to and fro between England and India appeared to me to be too risky. In 1945, after retiring from the Chair of Philosophy in the Calcutta University, I came to England. But Shortly after my arrival here I fell ill, and it was during this period of illness that I revised the manuscript and offered it to the University Press. This explains the unexpected delay between the publication of the third volume and the present one. The promises held out in the preface to the third volume, regarding the subjects to be treated in the present volume, have been faithfully carried out. But I am not equally confident now about the prospects of bringing out the fifth volume. I am growing in age and have been in failing health for long years. The physical and mental strain of preparing a work of this nature and of seeing it through the Press is considerable, and I do not know if I shall be able to stand such a strain in future. But I am still collecting the materials for the fifth volume and h0pe that I may be able to see it published in my life-time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Rulers of India, Vol. 4 By which the average home-keeping Englishman justifies to himself the indulgence of sitting down and casting dust on his head whenever he looks back upon the exploits of his countrymen in India, an attitude which is observed by foreigners with suspicion or impatience according to their insight into English character. Yet it would be easy to prove that one important reason why the English so rapidly conquered India was this, that the countries that fell into our hands had no nationalities, no long-seated ruling dynasties, or ancient aristocracies, that they had in fact no solid or permanent organization of any kind, but were politically treasure trove at the disposal of the first, who, having found, could keep. The best proof that in these countries the English destroyed no organized political institutions is the historical fact that in the coun tries which they annexed none such had been left for them to destroy. On the other hand, where indigenous political institutions of long standing still exist it is the English who have saved them from destruction. Moghul Empire, Aurangzeb The history of Muhammadan rule in India, from the early Arab conquests in Scinde down to the end of the reign of Shah J ehan, has already been treated in Part I. Of the present volume. Part II., which is now submitted to the public, deals with the violent reaction of bigotry and intolerance which character ised the reign of Aurangzeb, the son and successor of Shah J ehan. Aurangzeb professed to be a Sunni Muhammadan of the strictest type. He gained the throne by hypocrisy and. Murder, and then lavished the strength and treasures of the empire in the hope less attempt to crush out idolatry and heterodoxy, and to establish the religion of the Koran as the dominant faith of the people of India. Then followed popular tumults, Rajpfit revolts, and Mahratta up risings, which sapped the vitality of the Moghul Empire, and rendered it an easy prey to internal enemies and foreign invaders.
