Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendricks Chapel is one of Syracuse University's most recognizable landmarks and a beloved campus institution, standing both literally and figuratively at the heart of its campus. The chapel has been the site of some of the university's most significant events, from antiwar protests in the sixties to the vigil of nearly 3,000 people held on September 11, 2001. Its efforts to foster intellectual, cultural, and spiritual growth within the campus community have drawn distinguished speakers from all fields: the painter Grant Wood; poets Carl Sandberg and Robert Frost; novelists Paul Gallico and Ayn Rand; the arctic explorer Viljhalmur Stefansson; politicians such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Hillary Clinton; and religious figures and social activists such as Paul Tillich, the Dalai Lama, Elie Wiesel, and James Baldwin; as well as scientists, economists, and other scholars. This book, with contributions from other deans and staff, traces the history and evolution of the chapel, from its construction in 1930 when it was dedicated to promoting the "moral and spiritual welfare of the generations of young men and women at Syracuse University," to its many current functions as an inclusive spiritual and social resource for the university and the community at large.

Book excerpt: The character of a place is written in the stories of the people who live there, and no one knows this better than Dick Case. For fifty years, his Neighbors columns have chronicled the ups and downs of the Syracuse community, bringing into the spotlight the names, traditions and landmarks that might otherwise have slipped through the cracks of history. From heartwarming stories of neighbors good deeds and lovers reunited after war to the tragedies of unsolved murders and abandoned children, Case presents an intimate look at the families, friends and neighbors who call Syracuse home.

Book Synopsis The Media and Disasters by : Joan Deppa
Download or read book The Media and Disasters written by Joan Deppa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, The Media and Disasters looks behind the key scenes in the drama unfolding in the aftermath of the Pan Am 103 explosion: Lockerbie, visited by an estimated 1000 journalists in the month following the disaster; New York’s Kennedy Airport, where families learned in the presence of the media that their loved ones had perished; Syracuse University, plunged into mourning the loss of 35 students from the school’s study abroad programme; and homes on both sides of the Atlantic, grief-stricken as news reached relatives of the passengers and crew. The authors, professors of communication at Syracuse University with years of media experience, began looking at the effects of such coverage because of what they experienced when the media came to cover the grieving on their campus. What they learned in the U.S. and the U.K. will interest those concerned about media coverage of crisis events, as well as those who communicate about them: journalists, survivors, public information officers, public relations practitioners, emergency support personnel, business and political leaders.

Book Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.
Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
