Book excerpt: 1814, off the Durham coast, near the village of Hartlepool, a war-ship in the Napoleonic fleet founders during a storm and sinks. At day-break, fishermen discover a survivor: a monkey dressed in full military regalia, the mascot. The good people of Hartlepool despise all Frenchmen, though they have never seen one in the flesh. Nor have they ever see a monkey. But this brutish, bestial castaway tallies with the impression they have of the enemy, and the ape is court-martialled. Inspired by this famous legend, this is a tragi-comic fable of war and jingoism.

Book Synopsis A History of Greatham by : Peter Gripton
Download or read book A History of Greatham written by Peter Gripton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present-day Parish of Greatham lies in the county of Hampshire, on either side of the old Farnham (Surrey) to Petersfield Turnpike. The 'Domesday Book' of 1086 recorded Greatham as being 'Terra Regis', a Latin term meaning 'Land of the King', indicating that this was once a Royal manor belonging to William the Conqueror himself. In later years, the manor passed through many families by marriage and by purchase, including the Devenish, Marshall, Norton, Freeland, Love, Chawner and Coryton families. The name of the village has changed many times, however slightly, over the years. Greteham, Grietham, Gretham, Grutham, Gratham all derived from two separate words, the 'Old-English' (Anglo-Saxon) 'ham', meaning 'village, estate, manor or homestead' and an old Scandinavian word 'griot' or 'gryt', meaning 'stones or stony ground'. Thus the name 'Greotham' came into being, literally a 'stony estate' or 'farm on gravel'.

Download or read book North Shields written by Eric Hollerton and published by Tempus. This book was released on 1997 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of over 200 photographs draws on the archives of North Tyneside Libraries which have been built up through the donations of local people. The majority of the old scenes are from within living memory, but before the redevelopments of the 1960s and '70s, which cleared away much that people had come to think of as permanent.North Shields has done well to survive eight centuries, for a 'town where no town ought to be', and a great deal of its visible past is now lost. A definition of the boundaries of North Shields has always proved elusive. For the purpose of this book it has been taken to include the riverside between the Fish Quaay and Smith's Dock, and the streets south of the road to Tynemouth. Some of the photographs show only subtle changes to the present day, while others will help jog fading memories and a few may surprise even long term residents. The author has not attempted to include every significant building in the town, but the pictures have been chosen because they have given pleasure to the library users and others down the years. The book will pass on their pleasure to a wider audience and remind readers of just how much has disappeared.

Book Synopsis The Dignity of Labour by : Jon Cruddas
Download or read book The Dignity of Labour written by Jon Cruddas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does work give our lives purpose, meaning and status? Or is it a tedious necessity that will soon be abolished by automation, leaving humans free to enjoy a life of leisure and basic income? In this erudite and highly readable book, Jon Cruddas MP argues that it is imperative that the Left rejects the siren call of technological determinism and roots it politics firmly in the workplace. Drawing from his experience of his own Dagenham and Rainham constituency, he examines the history of Marxist and social democratic thinking about work in order to critique the fatalism of both Blairism and radical left techno-utopianism, which, he contends, have more in common than either would like to admit. He argues that, especially in the context of COVID-19, socialists must embrace an ethical socialist politics based on the dignity and agency of the labour interest. This timely book is a brilliant intervention in the highly contentious debate on the future of work, as well as an ambitious account of how the left must rediscover its animating purpose or risk irrelevance.
