Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Hampton and Elizabeth City County, Virginia Dear old Hampton, with its colonial, Revolutionary, 1812, and Civil War memories, has endured and survived much. We of the present Hampton, we who love this old place either because it is our home by inheritance or adoption must carry on and remember that we are its guardians and makers and that the Hampton of the future will be the sort of place we are making it today. With a deep and abiding love for the place of his birth and a keen interest in her welfare the first steps were taken by Hunter R. Booker, youngest son of Major and Mrs. George Booker, of Sherwood estate, now Langley Field, Elizabeth City County, who brought to the attention of his fellow towns and countrymen his wish that a history of Hampton be compiled as a matter of civic concern. In accord with this viewpoint the Retail Merchants Association of Hampton gave the money for this project and the history was written by Dr. Lyon G. Tyler, eminent Virginia genealogist and former President of the College of William and Mary. With commendable public spirit the Board of Supervisors of Elizabeth City County made up of Messrs. W. R. Rawlins, A. L. Dixon, Hunter R. Booker, as members, and H. H. Holt, clerk, made an appropriation for the publication of this history. In 1896 the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities put upon the old light house at Cape Henry a bronze tablet with these words upon it: "Near this spot landed April 26, 1607, Capt. Gabriell Archer, Hon. George S. Percy, Christopher Newport, Bartholomew Gosnold, Edward Maria Wingfield, with 25 others, who calling the place Cape Henry, planted a cross April 29, 1607." That same evening, toward dusk, while attempting to enter James River the colonists struck what is now known as Willoughby Spit, the eastern end of Hampton Roads, where "they found shallow water for a great way." Hicks offer up fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped it. The city's story begins at the origins of Old Point Comfort as early as 1608, long before the American Revolution. The Emancipation Proclamation was first read to the public on the grounds of today's Hampton University under what would soon be called the Emancipation Oak. NASA's Langley Research Center helped send astronauts to space and tested such icons as the Apollo lunar lander. Fort Monroe encompasses nearly two centuries of service to the country as the largest moated fort in North America. Join Holt and Hicks and enjoy the rich historical legacy every day of the year."--Page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: With this striking collection of historical images, experience a front-row view of the origination of the public school system within Hampton Roads and the epic struggle for racial equality. From the seventeenth century until the present, this area of the Old Dominion has been at the forefront of challenges, including Reconstruction, Jim Crow law, racial disharmony and public resistance to tax-based public schools. The fiftieth anniversary of the reopening of Norfolks desegregated schools marks an especially appropriate occasion on which to look back at the evolution of public education in the Hampton Roads region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olde Wythe neighborhood of Hampton, Virginia, lies along the water's edge of Hampton Roads, at the end of Virginia's Lower Peninsula. Hampton, settled in 1610, is the oldest continuously inhabited English-speaking city in the United States. At one time, Wythe was part of rural Elizabeth City County, one of the first eight Colonial Virginia counties, whose seat was Hampton. The Civil War Battle of the Ironclads happened right off Wythe's shores. Newport News's railroads and shipyard and Hampton's seafood industries and military installations fueled growth in the Lower Peninsula from 1880 through World War II. Residential development began in Wythe in the 20th century with the streetcar and continued through the social and business heyday of the 1950s. Today it is a neighborhood of charming architecture, lovely waterside views, and a promising future as new generations take up the challenge of preserving a rich heritage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hampton History: An Account of the Pennsylvania Hamptons in America in the Line of John Hampton, Jr., Of Wrightstown; With an Appendix Treating of Some Other Branches The writing required in this correspondence, together with the arranging of the matter and then making a final copy for the printer, was all done after the writer was seventy-six years of age, and without the aid of glasses, except the occasional use of a lens or reading glass. Immense labor and care has been taken to secure accuracy in everything and yet such is the ease with which mistakes may be made in copying figures, that it is too much to hope that no error will be found. Two errors in dates have already been detected in the writing of correspondents and corrected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
