Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Geology To the introduction of printing, after the middle of the fifteenth century, must be attributed the great impetus given to learning, though we may discern no evidence of development in the mental capacity over the great philosophers of Greece and Rome. Many facts were, however, recorded in a promiscuous way, some with shrewd and rational explanations, others accompanied by ludicrous hypotheses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence. An elementary knowledge of what is generally comprised under dynamical and structural geology is presupposed. It is assumed that a proper amount of laboratory and field work will be pursued in connection with the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Revelation: Or the Ancient History of the Earth But, it may be asked, why should two such incongruous topics be set down for discussion side by side? To an swer this question is to explain the scope and design of the present work. We are not going to write a Manual of Geology; nor yet a Treatise on Revelation. Taken sepa rately, these two subjects have been handled with eminent skill and ability; the one by the votaries of Science, the other by the friends of Theology. It is our purpose to con sider them not so much in themselves as in their mutual relations to compare the conclusions of Geology with the truths of Revelation; and to inquire if it be possible to accept the one and yet not to abandon the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Geological Explorations in Pennsylvania and Other States Thus the simple good sense of the unlearned confounds the wisdom of the wise; and many a professor of geology is put to the blush by obscure farmers, hunters and miners, who keep their eyes Open and their mouths shut, speak little and publish nothing, but do a deal of thinking and do it well; making themselves sure of plenty of facts, and ready to trip up the first comer who is a theorist beyond or in spite of facts. The first Geological Survey of Pennsylvania revealed a wonderful amount of actual science stowed away among the people. Download or read book Geology (Classic Reprint) written by John Walter Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology Hence, geology is largely dependent on other sciences for its advance: it depends on the help of chemist, physicist, geographer, zoologist, botanist, and astronomer. The geologist applies their several discoveries to the elucidation Of his own problem - the examination of the sub stance, structure, and history of the earth. His work is therefore varied, and the mastery of any one branch Of geology requires a knowledge of the various sciences connected with that branch. Hence geologists usually find themselves obliged to confine their activity to some one branch of geology; but their efforts in a Special direction will only yield the fullest results when based upon an understanding Of geology as a whole. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Geologic History of the Floridian Plateau This paper is the outgrowth of my association with two organiza tions, the United States Geological Survey and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. As Geologist in charge of Coastal Plain Investiga tions of the former organization, I have had unusual opportunities to familiarize myself with the geology of Florida, supplementing my previous field work in the State by several additional trips. I super vised and participated in the preparation of a report on the stratigraphic geology and a geologic map of the State, done in cooperation between the United States Geological Survey and the Florida State Survey, by Messrs. George Charlton Matson, Frederick G. Clapp, and Samuel San ford. I have therefore had at my disposal not only the results of my personal work for the Geological Survey, but also those of Messrs. Matson, Clapp, and Sanford. The information derived from my association with the United States Geological Survey is here utilized with the permission of the Director of that Bureau, and my hearty thanks are extended to him for the privilege. Book Synopsis The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts by : William John Miller
Download or read book The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts written by William John Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological History of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts: A Popular Account of Its Rocks and Origin The purpose of this little book is to present, in popular form, the salient points in the geological history of the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts. The beautiful valley and its charming boundary hills may in truth be said to be a geologist's paradise. In regard to variety of geological phenomena, few districts of equal size in North America surpass it. To most of its residents the marvelous story of the Connecticut Valley and adjacent hills as recorded in nature's book of the rocks is unknown. Beginning with the oldest decipherable records and leading up to the present time, it is my pleasure, in the following pages, to explain to the layman the principal known events in the wonderful geological history of the Connecticut Valley, including the origin of the valley as we see it today. The use of technical and unusual terms has been reduced to a minimum compatible with a reasonable understanding of the subject. Each of the few technical terms is explained where first used in the text. Since so many of the great principles of earth science (geology) are wonderfully illustrated in the Connecticut Valley and the adjacent highlands, it is my hope that this book may furnish the basis and inspiration to many people of the region for understanding and interpreting not only the principal records of the rocks, but also the important processes and laws of the science of geology illustrated by these records. To aid in the accomplishment of this purpose, simplified, largely nontechnical, scientific discussions are entered into. In order to make the conclusions more impressive and realistic actual easily accessible localities, carefully selected out of my field experience, are cited to illustrate each stage in the tremendously long history of the region. I am not satisfied to say to the reader, for example, long ages ago, according to geologists, the sea spread over central western Massachusetts. My purpose is to be much more precise than that, and to give the reader at least some of the geological reasoning upon which such conclusions are based.
