Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature, Vol. 1 of 2 Among the last acts of his life were his reading of my ms., and his instructions to his colleague about some alterations or kindly suggestions for the improvement of my text. But almost all the changes my version experienced were practically made by his own hand. In this paternal oversight I have cause for self-congratulation, for not every translator is so fortunate. I also received Professor Ten Brink's authority to make enlargements, extra foot-notes, a new arrangement of the paragraphs, or whatever else I might consider helpful in bring ing the work more closely home to his English and American readers, on whose appreciation he set great value. But I have naturally refrained from making much use of such flattering confidence; any changes or additions are duly noted where they occur. Besides the author's critical revision of my text, many of the proof sheets have been read by experienced students of English Literature, which has frequently resulted in a greater clearness of diction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 HE play, unlike the novel, is the most rigid Of literary forms, with the exception perhaps of the sonnet. In a novel the author has an almost free hand. He can tell his story quite objectively, he can make himself the hero, he can translate his characters most secret thoughts. He can make his novel a hundred, or five hundred, pages in length, and his story can last twenty-four years or as many hours. But the dramatist has no such easy task. He has to present a story within certain dimensions he cannot avail himself of the almost unlimited fields of the novel and of the film. Practical considerations play an important part. In the first place, because it is presenting rather than relating a fact, a play must be confined to a certain length, for the reason that no audience can Sit still for more than a few hours. In the second place, the characters have to speak for themselves, their motives and thoughts have to be made clear by their actions. And now, since the school Of naturalism has won the day, they are not even allowed the Simple, though sometimes ridiculous device, of the soliloquy, by which, in talking to himself, a character tells the audience facts necessary for the development Of the plot. Even the place of action is limited by the inability of the stage-hands to change more than a certain number of scenes in a given time, and by the more crude considerations of cost. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature, Vol. 1 of 4 With Taine's work in hand the thoughtful reader may realize to a large extent the significance of Leslie Stephen's memorable dictum: The whole art of criticism consists in learning to know the human being who is partially revealed to us in his written and spoken words. M. Taine's pages continually at test his deep conviction that the style is the man in a very comprehensive sense. In his Introduction to his History of English Literature, we find such statements as these You study the document only to know the man, just as you study the fossil shell only to know the animal behind it Genuine history is brought into existence only when the historian begins to unravel the living man, toiling, impassioned, en trenched in his customs, with his voice and features, his ges tures and dress, distinct and complete as he from whom we have just parted in the street; Twenty select phrases from Plato and Aristophanes will teach you much more than a multitude of dissertations and commentaries The true critic is present at the drama which was enacted 1n the soul of the artist or the writer; the choice of a word, the brevity or length of a sentence, the nature of a metaphor, the accent of a verse, the development of an argument - everything is a symbol to him; in short he works out its [the text's] psychology; there is a cause for ambition, for courage, for truth, as there is for mus cular movement or animal heat. To put M. Taine's great and characteristic merit into a sentence, we may say that he was the first writer on English literature to apply to it the fundamental principle, patent to every person of reflection, that we necessarily think in concrete terms, and that, there fore, a treatise must be valuable just in proportion to the concreteness of its presentation. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bookman Illustrated History of English Literature, Vol. 2 of 2: Pope to Swinburne Wherever God erects a house of prayer, The devil always builds a chapel there. In a preface, which is a model of clear and forcible writing, Defoe disclaims metrical correctness and explains his object, which is to convince his countrymen of the expediency of living up to their reputation of being good-natured, and to point out the absurdity of the English, who were a nation of mongrels compounded of the off-scourings of Europe in all ages, posing as a pure and ancient race and despising foreigners as such. What they are to-day, we were yesterday, and to-morrow they will be like us. Defoe made a thousand pounds by this artful lampoon on his fellow-countrymen, and was astonished by its success, which had had no parallel since the appearance of Hudibras. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of English Literature and Language, Vol. 2 The fact that 'constitutions are not made, but grow, ' 1 is simply a fragment of the much larger fact, that under all its aspects and through all its ramifications, Society is a growth and not a manufacture - Herbert Spencer. Politics - To the love of liberty succeeded the rage of fac tion. Ministry after ministry failed - the legal, the corrupt, and the national. The king aimed only to emancipate himself from control, and to gratify his private tastes. Ignorant of affairs and averse to toil, without faith in human virtue, believing that every person was to be bought, promising everything to every body, and addicted beyond measure to sensual indulgence, he brought the state by maladministration to the brink of ruin. Retribution was speedy. The defeated Roundheads, passing below the surface, began to reappear; and renouncing their republican ism as impracticable, took up the watchword of constitutional reform.
