Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England During the Early and Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The student will perceive at a glance, that I have confined myself exclusively to the political side of history. In the chapter on the English Church, for in stance, I have not attempted to sketch the variations of religious thought, or even to appropriate the labours, by which I have tried to profit, of Professor Brewer and Professor Stubbs, on the inner life of the great religious orders. It is necessary to my plan that I should treat such matters only in their results on secular society and those who have leisure and inclination for fuller re searches can easily refer to the sources I have indicated. It is difficult to be quite consistent in these matters, but, at the hazard of occasional meagreness, I have thought it better to confine myself to a single subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England During the Early and Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The present volume, like its predecessor, is intended to serve as a handbook of English history, and makes no pretensions to be an exhaustive narrative. The period which it embraces is one of great constitutional importance, and one for which we possess copious materials. By the time these have been thoroughly sifted we shall probably understand the history of families and property, the chronological order of events, and even the gradual changes in the distribution of population and wealth, as completely as we know them for any times but our own. In all these respects there is no reason why history should be less certain than geology; and the discrepancies observed in the statements of conflicting historians are really evidence to the wealth of material, and promise positive results, when the whole field has been explored. It is true, that, when all this shall have been done, only the dry bones of the past will have been collected. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England Principally in the Seventeenth Century, Vol. 2 If we consider the embarrassment in which Charles I had been involved by his conduct of the war, we are tempted to assume that, in order to extricate himself from it, he must have opened negotiations with the two great powers with which he was at war whilst they were still at variance with one another. This however was not the case. Negotiations with France were opened at the instigation of the powers combined to resist Spain, between which an agreement had first been set on foot by James I, and had been renewed by Buckingham. Those powers regarded the breach between England and France as a misfortune, which they must endeavour to obviate if they would carry on the war against Austria and Spain with full vigour. The Republic of Venice, which felt itself most seriously threatened by these powers, made a great point of promoting a reconciliation between France and England by the agency of its ambassadors. A few days before his unhappy end, Buckingham withdrew with the Venetian ambassador, Aluise Contarini, into a retired chamber in one of his country-houses, and there concerted with him a letter of pacific import to his brother envoy in France, for him to communicate to the French court. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England From the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of Elizabeth, Vol. 2 Where changes are about to take place of great and enduring moment, a kind of prologue, on a small scale, is seen sometimes to anticipate the true scale, is seen sometimes to anticipate the true opening of the drama; like the first drops which give notice of the coming storm, or as if the shadows of the reality were projected forwards into the future, and imitated in dumb show, the movements of the real actors in the story. Such a rehearsal of the English Reformation was witnessed at the close of the fourteenth century, confused, imperfect, disproportioned, to outward appearance barren of results; yet containing a representative of each one of the mixed forces by which the Reformation was ultimately effected, and foreshadowing even something of the course which it was to run.
