Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ancient Art: Among the Greeks Cline and fall - and also the causes to which may reasonably be attributed the points of resemblance and difference observable in the arts of different na tions. The soundness of his judgment, the acuteness and originality of his observations, and the copious ness of his illustrations, drawn from an intimate familiarity with every extant monument of ancient art, and with everything in ancient classic literature which could elucidate the subject to which he had devoted his life, render him the most trustworthy, instructive, and delightful of the writers on art. I cannot but think that a careful study of Winckel mann's History of Ancient Art, and a thoughtful consideration of the great principles embodied in it, must necessarily tend to form a pure, correct, and elevated taste. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art: Ancient Art For a comparison of the older and the newer views of art history, the reader can scarcely be referred to anything clearer than M. Faure's own discussion in the preface to the new edition of this work (page xxxv). His brief reference there to the synoptic tables at the back of each volume may be supplemented by the assurances received from various close students of the special schools and epochs, who agree in vouching for the thoroughness with which this most objective com pilation of names and dates has been made. A refer ence chart is thus constantly before the reader, serving him as a road map does a traveler. The text of most art histories does little more than amplify such tables. The characteristic which distinguishes Elie Faure's History of Art is that it shows the mass of facts func tionally - as the living brain and heart of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Sculpture Fragments of a great artistic past have come down to us, now torn from their original surroundings, and wrapped in mystery to our changed modern world. For centuries these monuments have lain buried beneath the soil, or, when visible, have too often suffered sadly from neglect. Sundering from this vast treasure what belongs to the plastic art, we find the sculptural monuments widely scattered, and often hopelessly isolated, so that a feeling of discouragement will sometimes come over one attempting to solve the riddles propounded. Here it is that the archaeologist comes to our aid, with his new-born science, which dates hardly farther back than the days of Winckelmann; and bringing to bear upon his subject the patient labor of the excavator and of the conscientious collector, the resources of profound learn ing and of a comparative spirit, and the breadth of a scientific vision which is able to classify and group the sundered fragments, he makes the dis jointed members more and more parts of an organic whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art Outlines, Vol. 1: Ancient Art A word of explanation is perhaps needed in publishing these Outlines Of the History of Art. My purpose is twofold, to facilitate the work Of my own classes by putting into their hands in printed form the analysis of their daily lessons, and a desire to meet the needs of others who, either alone or under guidance, may wish to pursue a systematic study of the subject. That there is need of such an outlined course has been made evident from requests, which come to me not infrequently, for suggestions and advice as to what to read and how to study the history Of art. As the General Analysis shows, the course is planned to cover two years, but to include' In the first year - for the benefit of those unable to take the second year - the two greatest and most important periods of art the world has as yet known, I. E., Greek Sculpture and Italian Painting. The second year's course is purposely left flexible that it may be adapted to the needs of each class. The Outlines of Parts I and II are substantially the analyses of the work given from day to day to my own classes for the last ten years, with such additions and modifications as more recent researches and excavations have from time to time made necessary. NO monument is included, I believe, that is not illustrated in class either by stereopticon, photograph or other reproduction where such exists, or by literary references and descriptions where such are our only sources of information. The bibliographies are intended as guides to books most readily accessible and may easily be supplemented from fuller bibliographies given in many of those named. The books placed in the hands of the class for the two terms' work here outlined are Tarbell's Greek Art and Gardner's Greek Sculpture upon which the analysis of the Introduction to Greek Sculpture (part II, C. I.) is largely based. In part II references are given to these handbooks wherever the different plan of this analysis has seemed to make it desirable. Whatever claim to originality can be made for the Outlines is in the choice and arrangement of material and in the emphasis placed upon certain periods as compared with others, the aim being to keep throughout a proper perspective and to trace the development of art in the periods of promise in such a way as to gain a deeper appreciation of the really beautiful and noble works in the age Of achievement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Christianity and Sacred Art in Italy Christian Rome presents no solemnities so interesting, from the historic point of view, as those for the Festival of SS. Peter and Paul, which, if somewhat two much gilded with the pomp of courts, are still a splendid symbol of the most wondrous development the world has ever beheld; and the contrast suggested by local association, at the great basilica, is in a scene once enacted on the same site, when the imperial circus with its long arcades, spina, and obelisk, rose dim-defined in darkness luridly dispelled by fires consuming human victims - how enduring their pangs we known not, though we know for what they suffered, some clad in beasts' skins and thus exposed to be torn by dogs, others crucified naked, others made to light up by their death-fires the arena in which, among a pleasure-seeking crowd, Nero drove round in his chariot to enjoy the spectacle he had ordered as well for amusement as for policy, desiring thus to divert against an obscure sect the popular suspicions awakened by recent disaster. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centaurs in Ancient Art: The Archaic Period As to the decorative border at each end of the cylinder, Clay says: This seems to be a characteristic feature of the seals of the Cassite period. Dr. W. H. Ward has suggested that the seal had a thin metal 0 cap, presumably of gold, upon which the border was cut. It would be mere speculation to suppose that because the centaur is found on Cassite monuments, it was originated by the Cassites. All we can say is that they _knew the centaur as early as 1350 The Hittites, I am convinced, have a better claim than the Cassites to the invention of the combination between horse and man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Art and Its Remains: Or a Manual of the Archaeology of Art In this Translation I have endeavoured to avoid, as much as possible, the introduction of new words; but, in the original, various technical terms occur, with which, notwithstanding their novelty to the English reader, I could not dispense; because their rejection would occasion, in some measure, a sacrifice of sense, or a disturbance of the system pursued by the author, - as in Tectonics and Architectonics for example. I may also mention the word scalpture. It is not, I believe, in use in our language, but as scalptura designates a particular branch of ancient art, I did not hesitate to Anglicise it. It may be proper also to explain, that throughout the work a distinction is kept up between column and pillar, the former denoting the circular supporting member of the different orders of architecture, the latter the square pier. The words formative and plastic, likewise, are employed as convertible epithets, except in a few instances where the latter is used in its original and more restricted sense; in these, however, its meaning may be discovered from the context. The most learned of my readers will be most ready to make allowance for the difficulties of my task, which were greatly enhanced, at least in the notes, by the author's desire to express his ideas in the briefest possible manner. By the perhaps too unsparing use of ellipsis he has frequently rendered his meaning obscure or ambiguous. In some instances I was enabled to discover the sense by my recollection of the monuments described, in many others by reference to the author's sources, and in some cases I have derived considerable benefit from the suggestions of Professor Donaldson, whose valuable works on the architectural remains of Greece and Italy are so frequently referred to by Muller, and to whom I take this opportunity of offering my warmest thanks for his obliging assistance. Nevertheless I cannot flatter myself that I have always succeeded in overcoming the difficulties I have had to encounter, and, in glancing over the work, I still find passages which I should have wished to amend. To give but one example of its absurdity, he speaks of the Phoenicians before he has said a word of Egypt; now, we all know that the art of Tyre and Sidon was but a late reflection from that of Egypt; the work shops of those two famous ports were mere factories of cheap Egyptian art objects for exportation.
