The medical personnel, hospital system, medical evacuation, and many other medical functions all contributed to the overall success of medical operations. The overall purpose of this research is to identify and describe the major historical operational factors of US Army rotary wing aeromedical evacuation system in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The successful operations of US Army rotary wing aeromedical evacuation system in each of these wars permit a historical comparison between them.

Book excerpt: This exceptional book tells the story of DUSTOFF from its conception. It reviews its development and use in both Korea and Vietnam, but focuses on the post-Vietnam years that saw almost constant transformation of unit structure, doctrine and structural command and control, and the development and adaptation of new aircraft and lifesaving equipment. It also chronicles the transfer of the MEDEVAC units from medical to aviation control, a most traumatic event that presented the MEDEVAC community with another set of challenges. What held steadfast through these times of change was the immutable fact that brave American Warriors on the battlefield executed the nation's wars with the faith that comes from knowing that should they become casualties, the DUSTOFF crews would come. Their heroic efforts were recognized during our nation's military missions in Panama, Desert Storm, Provide Comfort, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq; the almost continuous support for MAST operations across the nation; and innumerable responses to domestic crises, Hurricane Katrina most prominent among them. Theirs is a stellar legacy, one well recognized and now, well recorded.PART ONE - Fulfilling a Need: From Conception to Combat * Chapter One - An Honorable Heritage * Chapter Two - From Korea through Vietnam * PART TWO - Domestic Duties & Contingency Operations * Chapter Three - Quiet Years, 1973-1980 * Chapter Four - New Challenges: Near and Afar, 1981-1990 * PART THREE - An Angry Decade * Chapter Five - Desert Shield/Desert Storm, 1990-1991 * Chapter Six - Force Reductions, 1992-1995 * Chapter Seven - The Balkans, 1992-Ongoing * PART FOUR - Into the Millennium: New Challenges, at Home and Abroad * Chapter Eight - To 9/11, 2000-2001 * Chapter Nine - Again, Into Battle, 2001-2003 * Chapter Ten - Aviation Transformation and Domestic Operations, 2002-2005 * Chapter Eleven - Warriors of Compassion * APPENDICES * A: List of MEDEVAC Units * B: Typical History of an ARNG MEDEVAC Unit * C: MEDEVAC Losses Post-Vietnam Era through Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 1 * Abbreviations and Acronyms

Book excerpt: This is the exciting story of the development of U.S. airmobile power from theory to practice, involving air transport, fixed wing aircraft, and attack helicopters culminating in Vietnam War operations. It includes analysis of airmobile combat operations; doctrinal and interservice disputes; equipment descriptions; and the organization of combat and support units. It also includes data about airmobility in South Vietnam's army and it features personal reflections of the author, who was at the center of airmobility development and who commanded large airmobile units. John J. Tolson in June 1939 participated in the first tactical air movement of ground forces by the U.S. Army. He was in all combat jumps of the 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment during World War II, became an Army aviator in 1957, and served as Director of Army Aviation and Commandant of the Army Aviation School. From April 1967 to July 1968 he commanded the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), Vietnam. (Includes many maps and photographs)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Donald J. Mrozeks research sheds considerable light on how the use of air power evolved in the Vietnam War. Much more than simply retelling events, Mrozek analyzes how history, politics, technology, and the complexity of the war drove the application of air power in a long and divisive struggle. Mrozek delves into a wealth of original documentation, and his scholarship is impeccable. His analysis is thorough and balanced. His conclusions are well reasoned but will trouble those who have never seriously considered how the application of air power is influenced by factors far beyond the battlefield. Wether or not the reader agrees with Mrozek, the quality of his research and analysis makes his conclusions impossible to ignore. John C. Fryer, Jr. Brigadier General, United States Air Force Commander, Center for Aerospace Doctrine, Research and Education

This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1972 to 1982, approximately 1,500-2,100 US Air Force Reserve personnel trained and worked on C-123 aircraft that had formerly been used to spray herbicides in Vietnam as part of Operation Ranch Hand. After becoming aware that some of the aircraft on which they had worked had previously served this purpose, some of these AF Reservists applied to the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for compensatory coverage under the Agent Orange Act of 1991. The Act provides health care and disability coverage for health conditions that have been deemed presumptively service-related for herbicide exposure during the Vietnam War. The VA denied the applications on the basis that these veterans were ineligible because as non-Vietnam-era veterans or as Vietnam-era veterans without "boots on the ground" service in Vietnam, they were not covered. However, with the knowledge that some air and wipe samples taken between 1979 and 2009 from some of the C-123s used in Operation Ranch Hand showed the presence of agent orange residues, representatives of the C-123 Veterans Association began a concerted effort to reverse VA's position and obtain coverage. At the request of the VA, Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft evaluates whether or not service in these C-123s could have plausibly resulted in exposures detrimental to the health of these Air Force Reservists. The Institute of Medicine assembled an expert committee to address this question qualitatively, but in a scientific and evidence-based fashion. This report evaluates the reliability of the available information for establishing exposure and addresses and places in context whether any documented residues represent potentially harmful exposure by characterizing the amounts available and the degree to which absorption might be expected. Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure rejects the idea that the dioxin residues detected on interior surfaces of the C-123s were immobile and effectively inaccessible to the Reservists as a source of exposure. Accordingly, this report states with confidence that the Air Force Reservists were exposed when working in the Operation Ranch Hand C-123s and so experienced some increase in their risk of a variety of adverse responses.
