Book excerpt: The feasibility of constructing a nuclear reactor operating in the fast neutron spectrum for the production of fissionable material and power has been under study at Chicago since 1945. It is hoped that such reactors can eventually be constructed to economically convert fertile material into fissionable material at a rate significantly greater than it will be consumed and simultaneously produce significant amounts of electrical power. The Argonne National Laboratory has built and has been operating since August, 1951, a 1,000 kw fast reactor known as the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR). The machine was primarily designed to perform limited experiments using the smallest possible critical mass. Work on various types of fast breeders has been studied at KAPL, and Los Alamos is now operating a mercury cooled Pu fueled fast reactor. Brookhaven has been studying a lead cooled unit. This report will attempt review of the program and progress which has been made to date on the EBR.

Book excerpt: This book is about a new and different way of approaching and studying the history of the built environment and the use of historical precedents in design. However, although what I am proposing is new for what is currently called architectural history, both my approach and even my conclusions are not that new in other fields, as I discovered when I attempted to find supporting evidence. * In fact, of all the disciplines dealing with various aspects of the study of the past, architectural history seems to have changed least in the ways I am advocating. There is currently a revival of interest in the history of architecture and urban form; a similar interest applies to theory, vernacular design, and culture-environment relations. After years of neglect, the study of history and the use of historical precedent are again becoming important. However, that interest has not led to new approaches to the subject, nor have its bases been examined. This I try to do. In so doing, I discuss a more rigorous and, I would argue, a more valid way of looking at historical data and hence of using such data in a theory of the built environment and as precedent in environmental design. Underlying this is my view of Environment-Behavior Studies CEBS) as an emerging theory rather than as data to help design based on current "theory. " Although this will be the subject of another book, a summary statement of this position may be useful.

Book Synopsis Reception History, Tradition and Biblical Interpretation by : Robert Evans
Download or read book Reception History, Tradition and Biblical Interpretation written by Robert Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to make a contribution to current debates about the nature of Wirkungsgeschichte or reception history and its place in contemporary Biblical Studies. The author addresses three crucial questions: the relationship between reception history and historical-critical exegesis; the form of reception history itself, with a focus on the issue of which acts of reception are selected and valorized; and the role of tradition, pre-judgements and theology in relation to reception history. Disagreements about these matters contribute to what many characterise as the fragmentation of the discipline of biblical studies. The study champions the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer as a theoretical resource for understanding biblical interpretation, and a way of holding together with integrity the varied activities undertaken within the discipline. Each aspect of the argument is illustrated, tested and further explored with reference to the post-history of exhortations in the New Testament to 'be subject'. These have been widely cited and applied for 2,000 years – in literature, law and politics as well as in theological traditions. In this way the study makes a contribution not just to the theory but also the practice of reception history.
