Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for roots has been an enduring American preoccupation. Over the centuries, generations have sketched coats of arms, embroidered family trees, established local genealogical societies, and carefully filled in the blanks in their bibles, all in pursuit of self-knowledge and status through kinship ties. This long and varied history of Americans’ search for identity illuminates the story of America itself, according to François Weil, as fixations with social standing, racial purity, and national belonging gave way in the twentieth century to an embrace of diverse ethnicity and heritage. Seeking out one’s ancestors was a genteel pursuit in the colonial era, when an aristocratic pedigree secured a place in the British Atlantic empire. Genealogy developed into a middle-class diversion in the young republic. But over the next century, knowledge of one’s family background came to represent a quasi-scientific defense of elite “Anglo-Saxons” in a nation transformed by immigration and the emancipation of slaves. By the mid-twentieth century, when a new enthusiasm for cultural diversity took hold, the practice of tracing one’s family tree had become thoroughly democratized and commercialized. Today, Ancestry.com attracts over two million members with census records and ship manifests, while popular television shows depict celebrities exploring archives and submitting to DNA testing to learn the stories of their forebears. Further advances in genetics promise new insights as Americans continue their restless pursuit of past and place in an ever-changing world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diehl Families of America: History, Genealogy, Reminiscences, Etc Pride of ancestry and love of genealogy are worthy traits of any civilization. They foster _a Spirit that develops the best to be found in the human soul. Savages are ignorant of pedi grees, and are without lineage. We must turn to the enlightened of humanity for a record of the earth's activity and a history of her people. But a genealogy treats of but one branch of her many people. In this volume, the author desires to enroll the several branches of the Diehl families of this country, in an accurate and permanent manner. In compiling this work, I have found Diehls in nearly every state of the Union. The original ones almost invariably came from various sections of the Vaterland. To assemble data from such a large scope of widely situated locations is no easy task. Most of it must be done by mail by patient and persistent correspondence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As old as the prehistoric bones jumbled in caves, as new as the latest union consummated in a test tube, the family in one form or another is at the heart of every society. Our most common institution, it is also the source of some of the world's most compelling and persistent questions, touching the very quick of history, anthropology, psychology, and sociology. A History of the Family is the first work to address all these aspects of the family over time and across the earth--to search out what the family means in its most particular and universal senses. This monumental work in two volumes brings together experts from every discipline to show what the study of each epoch has to tell us about the family. Why is the family universal and yet so different in its various cultural manifestations? What notions of kinship regulate it, and how do these develop and change? Françoise Zonabend's anthropological perspective on these questions, leading off Volume I, surveys familial terms and arrangements from familiar patrilinear models to matrilinear societies in Sumatra and Ghana to polyandry among the Nayar and the Toda of India. The following essays, which move from prehistory to antiquity to the middle ages, trace the evolution of the family from primate behavior to codified practices--in Sumer and Babylon and ancient Rome, in feudal Europe and medieval Byzantium, in China and Japan and Arab Islam--and relate these developments to religious, economic, and governmental concerns from land ownership to dynastic control and the maintenance of public order.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Eastman Family of America Genealogy has been defined as an account or history of the descent of a person or family from an ancestor; the enumeration of ancestors and their children in natural order of succession. But it is sometimes asked, Of what use is it? The question might with almost equal propriety be asked con cerning the kindred sciences of history and biography, for if there is utility in preserving a record of events, or of the life and character of individuals, then science which embraces, as it is now understood and practiced, in a considerable degree both these features, must also be interesting and profitable. Our ancestors, the early founders of New England, were a reverent, conscientious and industrious people, and a consider ation of their lives, their hardships and their achievements, cannot fail of proving salutary. It is both a natural and honorable ambition on the part of any man to have his gene alogy traced, but unfortunately there are some who cannot see the necessity or desirableness of having their pedigrees ascertained, or of preserving any papers or documents bear ing upon them, that they may have their descent defined and arranged in authentic genealogical order. Most people appear content with mere traditionary details of their lineage, without being at the pains to authenticate them by reference to proper records or regular genealogical authorities. And to show the apathy some have, the author will state that he has repeatedly sent self-addressed stamped envelopes for information, and to this day no reply has been received. But he will say in addition, and to their credit, that the Eastmans, as a general thing, have taken a good deal of interest in the work. Book excerpt: Who am I and where did I come from? When author Gary Crone set out 30 years ago to find an answer, little did he know he was embarking on an epic quest leading him across four continents and taking him over 120,000 years back in time. In One Thin Thread you will follow a deep ancestry trail from Africa to Asia and then Europe. Along the way you will learn why the only thing that separates all humans today in an ancestral sense is time and distance as you venture into the world of cutting edge genetic DNA research. Follow Germanic ancestors through their invasions of Gaul and epic battles with Rome. Find out what the ancestors were doing during the Reformation in Europe, the Black Plague and the many European wars that ravaged their lands and persecuted their religion. Then decipher the meaning of surnaming practices adopted by our post-Medieval ancestors before immigrating to America. Read why our Palatine immigrants named 1738 the "Year of the Destroying Angel" and their first plantation "Hungry Hook." Follow generations of pioneer ancestors through the American Revolution, settling the Western frontier and serving as political, religious and civil leaders. Individual stories in their historical context abound, such as an ancestor who often shared dinner with Abraham Lincoln and a cousin wounded on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg. There are also stonemasons, cabinetmakers, cigar makers, world-renowned artists, preachers, doctors, lawyers, military leaders and even a Rhodes Scholar to meet. In short, be prepared for a lot more than names, dates, births and deaths. Be prepared to discover a rich family legacy. Gary Crone holds a History degree from Dartmouth College, a Master's in Strategic Intelligence Studies from the Joint Military Intelligence College, Washington, D.C. and a Juris Doctor degree from the Notre Dame Law School. He was also a National Security Fellow with the Kennedy School at Harvard University. After over 30 years of public service, he retired in 2009. One Thin Thread also includes genealogy research on the associated Krone, Munger, Bell, Stickel, Morrison, Kline, Watson, McMillan, Brown, Lovell, Murdick, Yates, Spangler, Surratt, Rohler, Frankeberger, Watts, Burns and Muckey families, just to name a few.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lineage and Biographies of the Norris Family in America From 1640-1892: With References to the Norrises of England as Early as 1311 A well prepared book of genealogy and biographies is of great value because of its relation to local and general history, and it preserves a vast amount of information which otherwise would be lost. Lands and homes are located and described, the manners of life of bygone generations are delineated, and they who have long been sleeping are, by the published records of their lives, made familiar acquaintances of the present generation. The life-history, with the toils, struggles, sacrifices of our predecessors is made known to those of the present, for their benefit and loyal appreciation. The fathers and mothers of the long ago, live again in their descendants. My task is over. They who have kindly furnished me information and records of themselves or others, have my sincere thanks. They who from any cause neglected my oft repeated and urgent request to impart desired knowledge, may, when too late, regret their indifference. I experienced considerable difficulty in securing a sufficient number of subscribers in the Norris family to liquidate the expense of publication, not to mention the expense of prepara tion, of this book. At this critical juncture Hon. Lyman Decatur Norris, of Grand Rapids, Mich., very wisely and generously aided in a substantial manner, and made sure the publication of this work. To him I, with every member of the Norris Family, am greatly indebted for his generosity and aid in the preservation of this family history. Book excerpt: The constraints and opportunities of moderniation throughout the non-Western worldinevitably lead to the breakdown and supplanting of older social relations and livelihoods. Inthis volume, Andrew P. Davidson examines the Nuba Mountain region of western Sudan to show howindividuals and families struggle to maintain or expand their well-being in the face ofcontinuous uncertainty, when control of their destinies is increasingly slipping out of thecomforting confines of the village. He offers a comparative and historical examination ofeconomic life in three villages to show how the older lineage system based on communalism, kinship and age-based hierarchy is being displaced by new forces of social organiation andindividual orientation which have eroded village cohesion and left the Nuba vulnerable to theIslamic-dominated government in Khartoum and the ravages of the continuing Sudanese civilwar. Andrew P. Davidsonis lecturer of sociology at the University of New England at Armidale in Australia.
