Book excerpt: In the summer of 2002 the third international conference on the medieval chronicle was held, again in the vicinity of Utrecht, the Netherlands. There are several reasons why the chronicle is particularly suited as the topic of an international conference. In the first place there is its ubiquity: all over Europe and throughout the Middle Ages chronicles were written, both in Latin and in the vernacular, and not only in Europe but also in the countries neighbouring on it, like those of the Arabic world. Secondly, all chronicles raise such questions as by whom, for whom, or for what purpose were they written, how do they reconstruct the past, what determined the choice of verse or prose, or what kind of literary influences are discernable in them. Finally, many chronicles have been beautifully illuminated, and the relation between text and image leads to a wholly different set of questions. This third volume of conference papers again aims to provide a representative survey of the on-going research in the field of chronicle studies, illustrated by examples from specific chronicles from a wide variety of countries, periods and cultural backgrounds.

Book excerpt: This book presents a narratological analysis of the Kaiserchronik, or chronicle of the emperors, the first verse chronicle to have been written in any European vernacular language, which provides an account of the Roman and Holy Roman emperors from the foundation of Rome to the eve of the Second Crusade. Previous research has concentrated on the structure and sources of the work and emphasized its role as a Christian narrative of history, but this study shows that the Kaiserchronik does not simply illustrate a didactic religious message: it also provides an example of how story-telling techniques in the vernacular were developed and explored in twelfth-century Germany. Four aspects of narrative are described (time and space, motivation, perspective, and narrative strands), each of which is examined with reference to the story of a particular emperor (Constantine the Great, Charlemagne, Otto the Great, and Henry IV). Rather than imposing a single analytical framework on the Kaiserchronik, the book takes account of the fact that modern theory cannot always be applied directly to works from premodern periods: it draws critically on a variety of approaches, including those of Gérard Genette, Boris Uspensky, and Eberhard Lämmert. Throughout the book, the narrative techniques described are contextualized by means of comparisons with other texts in both Middle High German and Latin, making clear the place of the Kaiserchronik as a literary narrative in the twelfth century.

Hence, all ethics and morality are predicated on perceived right or wrong behavior, and much of human culture proves to be the result of a larger discourse on vices and virtues, transgression and ideals, right and wrong. The topics covered in this volume, addressing fundamental concerns of the premodern world, deal with allegedly criminal, or simply wrong behavior which demanded punishment. Von der Marchenstruktur der Artusromane uber Marchenelemente der epischen Chanson de geste bis zu der Literatur der sog. kleinen Formen wie Lai und Exempel ist die Bedeutung einer Gattung spurbar, die gleichwohl als solche nicht existiert und erst in Renaissance und Barock wieder entdeckt werden wird. Bis dahin konnte man wie auf einem uberschriebenen Palimpsest von Marchenspuren sprechen, die durch die manifeste Textstruktur okkultiert werden. Offensichtlich ist die autonome mythische Stimme mit mittelalterlicher Geistigkeit nicht vereinbar, doch zugleich faszinierend genug, um in der hofisch-klerikalen Schriftkultur neu instrumentalisiert zu werden. Die vorliegenden Kapitel, zum Teil bereits publiziert und zum Teil neu verfasst, schliessen sich unter diesem Aspekt der entfremdeten mythischen Stimme zu einem Panorama der Refunktionalisierung von Marchenstoffen in den Grossgattungen Roman und Chanson de geste zusammen. Im Gegensatz zu dem reichen Marchenmaterial, das wir z. B. in den Predigtexempeln finden, ist die Auswahl auf wenige bekannte Stoffe begrenzt, die hier erstmals in einer gemeinsamen funktionsgeschichtlich ideologischen Perspektive zusammen behandelt werden.
