Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years of Inside Life in Wall Street: Or Revelations of the Personal Experience of a Speculator, Including Sketches of the Leading Operators and Money Kings, the Great Rises and Panics, the Mysteries of the Rings, Pools, and Corners, and How Fortunes Are Made and Lost on Change Hon. William Worthington Fowler, the author of this work, is a grandson of Noah Webster, and the author of several other volumes. He has been a member of the Connecticut Senate and House of Representatives, and held numerous other prominent positions. He is now Chairman of the Commission appointed by the Governor of Connecticut to examine and report as to the expediency of adopting an amended orthography of the Public Documents. This Commission embraces some of the most eminent scholars in the country. In addition to his public and literary labors, Mr. Fowler has had long and varied experiences in financial matters. Ten years since he embodied these experiences in a volume which was so well received that forty thousand copies were sold in a short period, though the price of the work was fixed at three dollars. John G. Whittier wrote to the author, "Thy book is full of interest. Its descriptions of the tremendous games of speculation, the rise and fall of fortune, the reckless regard and desperate adventure which shocked and disturbed the world are exceedingly graphic and spirited." Charles Sumner, Salmon P.Chase, George S. Boutwell, Benson J. Lossing, John G. Saxe, and very many other individuals of prominence wrote in similarly complimentary terms to the author regarding his entertaining work. Nearly one hundred and fifty newspapers, including all the leading journals of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, and other cities, gave most flattering notices of the volume, and it was everywhere read with avidity. Mr. Fowler has now recast his original book of ten years ago and brought it up to date, including the colossal stock movements of the latter half of 1879, and given us twenty instead of ten years of his individual experiences and observations in the great maelstrom of speculation. The work is valuable, if for nothing more, as showing to the uninitiated how unsatisfactory are the efforts to acquire fortunes by speculation, and warning them against the dangerous pitfalls in which Wall street abounds. But the writer in graphically describing his own financial vicissitudes, running through twenty years, conveys at the same time a vast amount of entertaining and valuable information regarding the financial operators and operations of that period. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street is an unending source of legend--and nightmares. It is a universal symbol of both the highest aspirations of economic prosperity and the basest impulses of greed and deception. Charles R. Geisst's Wall Street is at once a chronicle of the street itself--from the days when the wall was merely a defensive barricade built by Peter Stuyvesant--and an engaging economic history of the United States, a tale of profits and losses, enterprising spirits, and key figures that transformed America into the most powerful economy in the world. The book traces many themes, like the move of industry and business westward in the early 19th century, the rise of the great Robber Barons, and the growth of industry from the securities market's innovative financing of railroads, major steel companies, and Bell's and Edison's technical innovations. And because "The Street" has always been a breeding ground for outlandish characters with brazen nerve, no history of the stock market would be complete without a look at the conniving of ruthless wheeler-dealers and lesser known but influential rogues. This updated edition covers the historic, almost apocalyptic events of the 2008 financial crisis and the overarching policy changes of the Obama administration. As Wall Street and America have changed irrevocably after the crisis, Charles R. Geisst offers the definitive chronicle of the relationship between the two, and the challenges and successes it has fostered that have shaped our history.

Book excerpt: The New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice • The incredible saga of the German-Jewish immigrants—with now familiar names like Goldman and Sachs, Kuhn and Loeb, Warburg and Schiff, Lehman and Seligman—who profoundly influenced the rise of modern finance (and so much more), from the New York Times best-selling author of Sons of Wichita Joseph Seligman arrived in the United States in 1837, with the equivalent of $100 sewn into the lining of his pants. Then came the Lehman brothers, who would open a general store in Montgomery, Alabama. Not far behind were Solomon Loeb and Marcus Goldman, among the “Forty-Eighters” fleeing a Germany that had relegated Jews to an underclass. These industrious immigrants would soon go from peddling trinkets and buying up shopkeepers’ IOUs to forming what would become some of the largest investment banks in the world—Goldman Sachs, Kuhn Loeb, Lehman Brothers, J. & W. Seligman & Co. They would clash and collaborate with J. P. Morgan, E. H. Harriman, Jay Gould, and other famed tycoons of the era. And their firms would help to transform the United States from a debtor nation into a financial superpower, capitalizing American industry and underwriting some of the twentieth century’s quintessential companies, like General Motors, Macy’s, and Sears. Along the way, they would shape the destiny not just of American finance but of the millions of Eastern European Jews who spilled off steamships in New York Harbor in the early 1900s, including Daniel Schulman’s paternal grandparents. In The Money Kings, Schulman unspools a sweeping narrative that traces the interconnected origin stories of these financial dynasties. He chronicles their paths to Wall Street dominance, as they navigated the deeply antisemitic upper class of the Gilded Age, and the complexities of the Civil War, World War I, and the Zionist movement that tested both their burgeoning empires and their identities as Americans, Germans, and Jews.

Book excerpt: As stock prices and investor confidence have collapsed in the wake of Enron, WorldCom, and the dot-com crash, people want to know how this happened and how to make sense of the uncertain times to come. Into the breach comes one of Wall Street's legendary investors, Leon Levy, to explain why the market so often confounds us, and why those who ought to understand it tend to get chewed up and spat out. Levy, who pioneered many of the innovations and investment instruments that we now take for granted, has prospered in every market for the past fifty years, particularly in today's bear market. In The Mind of Wall Street he recounts stories of his successes and failures to illustrate how investor psychology and willful self-deception so often play critical roles in the process. Like his peers George Soros and Warren Buffett, Levy takes a long and broad view of the rhythms of the markets and the economy. He also offers a provocative analysis of the spectacular Internet bubble, showing that the market has not yet completely recovered from its bout of "irrational exuberance." The Mind of Wall Street is essential reading for all of us, whether we are active traders or simply modest contributors to our 401(k) plans, as volatile and unnerving markets come to define so much of our net worth.

Book excerpt: They laid the foundations of American finance and defined the American brand of capitalism. They bankrolled wars, were the impetus behind the building of the first transcontinental railroad system, and fueled a fledgling nation’s grandiose dreams of empire. S&M Allen, J. P. Morgan & Co., Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers...they were the great Wall Street partnerships, and for well over a century, through a combination of financial genius, political chicanery, and the audacity of Caesars, they wielded unprecedented influence over the business, financial, and political landscapes of a nation. The Last Partnerships combines rigorous scholarship with journalism at its best to present a panoramic history of the rise and fall of the great financial houses—from the “Yankee Bankers,” at the turn of the 19th century, up to Goldman Sachs’ historic IPO in 1999—tracing their origins, their successes and failures over the years, and the reasons for their ultimate demise. The Last Partnerships is must-reading for history buffs and everyone interested in the world of finance behind the business-page headlines.
