Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Studies and Recreations, Vol. 1 Or the five works included in these volumes, three were originally published by the author under the nom de plume of J. A. G. Barton, While the fourth and fifth have appeared, in part only, in the pages of two Indian Maga zines. Their collection in the form in which they are now presented has hardly any justification, except in the author's wish to bring them all forward a second time before the reading public. Those which appeared in book form before were largely, and, for the most part, very indulgently reviewed, and extracts from some of these notices are appended to the second volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations of a Sportsman, Vol. 1 of 2 England, occasionally interspersing them with sketches and anecdotes of those lovers of field amusements who have rendered themselves worthy of such a notice. Although we do not pledge our selves to confine our remarks to the sports of the month, we shall, as far as lies in our power, treat of those that are principally indulged in during those respective divisions; and, to carry out that view, we commence with the diversions of January. The more northern nations anciently assigned portentous qualities to the winds of New Year's Eve, as may be gleaned from the following legend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Joliet Prison Post, 1914, Vol. 1: Devoted to Prison News I umpire their ball games because I like base ball and enjoy being with them, and I find that my presence at recreation has a good effect in checking profanity. I reason that the more I interest myself in their daily lives the stronger my influence with them will be because of the confidence thus gained. The prison day school, which is under my supervision, was started in October and will be continued at least until May. It may be sus pended during the hot weather. As a day school it is an innovation, as, previously, the prison had known only evening schools, and these were limited to two sessions every week, of one and one-half hours duration each. These were held in one school room in each wing, where fourteen classes recited at one time. The new administration has provided four school rooms, and every prisoner who so de sires may absent himself from work for one hour per day in order to attend. This privi lege depends only upon good behavior in the school and application to the studies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Indian Angles is a new historical approach to Indian English literature. It shows that poetry, not fiction, was the dominant literary genre of Indian writing in English until 1860 and re-creates the historical webs of affiliation and resistance that writers in colonial India--writers of British, Indian, and mixed ethnicities--experienced.
