Book excerpt: The Virginia 7th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, at Manassas Junction, Virginia, with men from Giles, Madison, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Greene, and Albemarle counties. It fought at First Manassas under General Jubal Early, then served with Richard Ewell, Ambrose P. Hill, James L.Kemper, and William R. Terry. In April, 1862, the regiment had 700 effectives and later was active in the various campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Gettysburg. It participated in Longstreet's Suffolk expedition, was prominent in the capture of Plymouth, then fought at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. The 7th continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River and around Appomattox. The regiment sustained 47 casualties at First Manassas, 77 at Williamsburg, 111 at Frayser's Farm, 59 at Second Manassas, and 4 at Fredericksburg. About 40% of the 335 engaged at Gettysburg were disabled. It lost 39 men at Drewry's Bluff, and many were captured at Five Forks and Sayler's Creek. Only 20 officers and men were present at the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Two published firsthand accounts for this regiment are available plus The Seventh Virginia Infantry by David F. Book excerpt: The Louisiana 7th Infantry Regiment [also called the Pelican Regiment] was organized in May, 1861, and entered Confederate service at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in June. The men were from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Donaldsonville, and Livingstone. Ordered to Virginia with more than 850 men, the unit served under General Early at First Manassas. Later it was brigaded under R. Taylor, Hays, and York. It was prominent in Jackson's Valley Campaign and on many battlefields of the Army of Northern Virginia. The 7th served from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then was involved in Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley and the Appomattox Campaign. It took 827 men to First Manassas, had 132 disabled at Cross Keys and Port Republic, and lost 68 during the Seven Days' Battles and 69 in the Maryland Campaign. The unit sustained 80 casualties at Chancellorsville and 24 at Second Winchester, lost twenty-four percent of the 235 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 180 captured at Rappahannock Station. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Mason, near Graham, North Carolina, in August 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Alexander, Cabarrus, Rowan, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Nash, and Wake. The unit took an active part in the fight at New Bern, and then advanced to Virginia. It was assigned to General Branch's, Law's, and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. After fighting at Hanover Court House, it participated in the various campaigns of the army from the Seven Days Battles to Cold Harbor, and then was involved in the Siege of Petersburg south and north of the James River. The regiment sustained 51 casualties at New Bern, 253 out of the 450 engaged during the Seven Days Battles, 69 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 52 at Sharpsburg, and 86 at Fredericksburg. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

Book excerpt: The Georgia 7th Infantry Regiment was formed in May, 1861, at Atlanta, Georgia, and in June moved to Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Assigned to Colonel F. S. Bartow's Brigade, Army of the Shenandoah, it was active in the fight at First Manassas. In April, 1861, the regiment had 611 effectives and served under the command of General G. T. Anderson until the end of the war. The 7th participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Day's Battles to Cold Harbor, except when it was detached with Longstreet at Suffolk, in Georgia, and at Knoxville. The 7th was not involved in the Battle of Chickamauga. It was active in the long Petersburg siege south and north of the James River and later the Appomattox Campaign. It reported 153 casualties at First Manassas, 147 during the Seven Day's Battles. Losses were light at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, but from April 14 to May 6 there were 98 disabled, and from August 1 to December 31, 1864, the unit had 56 killed or wounded. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 24 officers and 164 men. The few who survived the war returned home to total destruction and for many of the men of Companies D and H, their wives and children were never found, having been shipped north by Sherman and left destitute in Ohio and Illinois. This story of the Roswell and Mansfield Mill Workers is another documented atrocity against southern civilians performed by Sherman and his troops. Book excerpt: The Alabama 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, 18 May 1861, with 8 infantry and 2 mounted companies. It remained on duty there until November. The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. However, the two mounted companies from Autauga and Lauderdale retained their organization and fought at Shiloh, as did other men from the regiment. The mounted companies became part of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry following Shiloh and the majority of the remaining men and officers joined other organizations. Eleven companies made up the Tenth Virginia. Seven companies were drawn from Rockingham County, two from Shenandoah County, one from Page and one from Madison County. A total of about 1,350 men in all served in the Tenth during the time when the regiment was under arms. Book excerpt: The 16th Connecticut was formed in Hartford County, Connecticut, in July and August 1862. It was mustered into service August 24, 1862 and became part of Mr. Lincoln's Army of the Potomac. Three weeks later the regiment first saw action at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland as part of Burnside's Ninth Army Corps. Having loaded muskets for the first time only the day before the battle, the regiment suffered significant casualties at Antietam. It next saw action at Fredericksburg, Virginia in December 1862, then at the Siege of Suffolk, Virginia in April/May 1863. In 1864, the 16th Connecticut, then with the 18th Army Corps, was part of the Union garrison at Plymouth, North Carolina, and vigorously defended Plymouth against a Confederate combined land and naval attack April 17-20, 1864 led by General Robert F. Hoke, C.S.A. Outnumbered more than 5 to 1, with no means of escape or opportunity for reinforcements, the Union garrison at Plymouth was surrendered on April 20, 1864 by Brigadier General Henry W. Wessells.

Book excerpt: The Virginia 14th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, and entered Confederate service at Richmond in July. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Amelia, Bedford, Fluvanna, Chesterfield, Halifax, and Mecklenburg. The regiment was brigaded under Generals Armistead, Barton, and Steuart. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Gettysburg, served in North Carolina, then saw action at Drewry's Bluff. The 14th participated in the long Petersburg siege north of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. In June 1862, it contained 449 men, reported 12 killed, 57 wounded, and 6 missing at Malvern Hill and 7 wounded during the Maryland Campaign. Of the 422 engaged at Gettysburg, more than twenty-five percent were disabled. The regiment sustained 71 casualties at Drewry's Bluff and lost many at Five Forks and Sayler's Creek. Only 7 officers and 49 men surrendered on April 9. 1865.
