Anderson's and E.L. Thomas' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 49th Georgia Infantry took an active part in the campaigns of the ANV from the battles of Seven Pines to Cold Harbor, fought in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and was surrendered at Appomattox surrendered with 8 officers and 103 men. The regiment reported 68 casualties at Second Manassas and 61 at Fredericksburg. The unit lost thirteen percent of the 280 at Chancellorsville and more than twenty-five percent of the 329 at Gettysburg. It, along with the 18th was created as the last of the units formed in 1861 and did not participate in the early deployment. The 19th was involved the reorganization of the troops in the spring of 1862. They then moved to Mississippi, then to Kentucky where it saw action at Munfordsville. The 19th served with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and was active in the South Carolina Campaign and the North Carolina operations. The regiment lost 8 killed and 72 wounded at Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th sustained 236 casualties at Chickamauga and totaled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, July 22-28, the 19th reported 12 killed, 60 wounded, and 25 missing, and there were 9 killed, 34 wounded, and 8 missing at Ezra Church. It surrendered on April 26, 1865, with 76 men.

Its members were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Alexander, Cabarrus, Rowan, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Nash, and Wake. The unit took an active part in the fight at New Bern, and then advanced to Virginia. It was assigned to General Branch's, Law's, and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. After fighting at Hanover Court House, it participated in the various campaigns of the army from the Seven Days Battles to Cold Harbor, and then was involved in the Siege of Petersburg south and north of the James River. The regiment sustained 51 casualties at New Bern, 253 out of the 450 engaged during the Seven Days Battles, 69 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 52 at Sharpsburg, and 86 at Fredericksburg. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

The men were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Edgecombe, Cabarrus, Wilkes, Gates, Hyde, Cumberland, Forsyth, and Greene. After fighting at New Bern, the unit moved to Virginia and saw action at Hanover Court House. It served under Generals Branch and Lane and participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. Later it took its place in the Petersburg trenches and was involved in the Appomattox operations. This regiment sustained 75 casualties during the Seven Days' Battles, 36 at Cedar Mountain, 8 at Second Manassas, and 41 at Fredericksburg. It lost forty-two percent of the 480 engaged at Chancellorsville and twenty percent of the 368 at Gettysburg. The unit reported 4 killed and 19 wounded at Spotsylvania and 5 killed, 29 wounded, and 4 missing at Jericho Mills. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered 11 officers and 108 men. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. It served in the Department of North Carolina until May, 1863. During the conflict it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Kirkland, and MacRae. The regiment spent the first year in and around North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In March of 1863 it participated in the unsuccessful attempt to recapture New Bern, N.C. The 47th moved to Virginia in May 1863 and fought with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning at Gettysburg. In June of 1863 it was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia along with Brigadier General James J. Pettigrew, under Major General Henry Heth, of A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps. On July 1st, 1863 the Brigade under commander James Pettigrew was the first to engage the Union forces of General John Buford. The 47th was held in reserve during that first engagement, but later took part in Pickett's Charge under James Pettigrew. During the battle of Gettyburg it's losses were 21 killed and 140 wounded (35% of the 567 engaged.) General James Pettigrew was killed in the retreat from Gettysburg and the brigade was later assigned to Brigadier Generals Kirkland and MacRae. The 47th fought at Cold Harbor, then was involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. They reported 42 casualties at Bristoe and 20 at The Wilderness. It surrendered 5 officers and 72 men. It was mustered into service August 24, 1862 and became part of Mr. Lincoln's Army of the Potomac. Three weeks later the regiment first saw action at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland as part of Burnside's Ninth Army Corps. Having loaded muskets for the first time only the day before the battle, the regiment suffered significant casualties at Antietam. It next saw action at Fredericksburg, Virginia in December 1862, then at the Siege of Suffolk, Virginia in April/May 1863. In 1864, the 16th Connecticut, then with the 18th Army Corps, was part of the Union garrison at Plymouth, North Carolina, and vigorously defended Plymouth against a Confederate combined land and naval attack April 17-20, 1864 led by General Robert F. Hoke, C.S.A. Outnumbered more than 5 to 1, with no means of escape or opportunity for reinforcements, the Union garrison at Plymouth was surrendered on April 20, 1864 by Brigadier General Henry W. Wessells.

Its members were raised in the counties of Anson, Lincoln, Montgomery, Richmond, Granville, Catawba, and Gaston. Seven companies arrived in Virginia on July 21; the other three came in August. First assigned to the Potomac District in the Department of Northern Virginia, it was later placed under the command of Generals Early, Garland, Iverson, and R.D.Johnston. The 23rd fought with the army from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, served in Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and was active around Appomattox. It totalled 540 effectives in April, 1862, lost 84 during the Seven Days' Battles, had 18 killed and 35 wounded in the Maryland Campaign, and suffered 1 wounded at Fredericksburg. Of the 430 engaged at Chancellorsville, forty percent were disabled, and more than eighty percent of the 316 at Gettysburg were killed, wounded, or missing. They served in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout most of its campaigns. They were attached to Early's Brigade in September of 1861 and transferred to the brigades of Generals Toombs and Benning in April 1862. The 20th fought with the army from the Seven Days Battles to Cold Harbor. They went with General Longstreet to fight at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and operations in east Tennessee including Chattanooga and Knoxville, then returned to Virginia in time for the spring campaign of 1864, enduring the hardships of the Petersburg trenches south and north of the James River.
