The men were from the counties of Cumberland, New Hanover, Beaufort, Orange, Craven, and Wake. From the notes appearing with the individual companies' rosters, it is apparent that these companies existed earlier in the war in various other commands and the creation of the 13th Artillery was the result of reorganization.The 13th Artillery was assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. They were stationed at Weldon, North Carolina, guarding the railroad and shipping lines. They fought at Bentonville, and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph B. Starr was in command. This book includes a very good firsthand account by James M. Mullen, Captain of Company A and serving in command of the battalion. He describes the situation around the Weldon Railroad and the final battles around Bentonville at the end of the war.Company A - Was Company D and the North Carolinians in Company B, 12th Battalion Virginia Light Artillery until 4 November 1863. Company B - Was 2nd Company B, 36th North Carolina Troops (2nd Regiment North Carolina Artillery), until 4 November 1863. Company C - Was 1st Company C, 36th Regiment North Carolina Troops (2nd Regiment North Carolina Artillery) until 4 November 1863. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 13th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 3rd Volunteers, was organized at Garysburg, North Carolina, in May, 1861, with 1,100 men. Its members were recruited in Caswell, Mecklenburg, Davie, Edgecombe, and Rockingham counties. Ordered to Virginia, the unit was assigned to General Colston's, Garland's, Pender's, and Scales' Brigade. It shared in the many campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, endured the battles and hardships of the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and took part in the Appomattox operations. This regiment totalled 575 effectives in April, 1862, lost 29 killed and 80 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, and had 41 killed and 149 wounded in the Maryland Campaign. It reported 37 casualties at Fredericksburg and 216 at Chancellorsville. Of the 232 engaged at Gettysburg, more than seventy-five percent were disabled. It surrendered 22 officers and 193 men.Three first hand accounts are available for the 13th North Carolina. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 3rd Artillery Regiment AKA the 40th Regiment Volunteers was organized at Bald Head, Smith's Island, North Carolina, in November, 1863, from heavy artillery companies formed in 1861 and 1862. Its men were from the counties of Lenoir, Beaufort, Pamlico, Richmond, Robeson, Wayne, Wilson, Edgecombe, Greene, New Hanover, Bladen, Anson, and Chatham. The 3rd Artillery was assigned to guard the key Fort Fisher. Until the last few months of the Civil War, Fort Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade-runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies inland. By 1865, the supply line through Wilmington was the last remaining supply route open to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. When Fort Fisher fell its defeat helped to seal the fate of the Confederacy. The Confederate army evacuated their remaining forts in the Cape Fear area, and within weeks Union forces overran Wilmington. Once Wilmington fell, the supply line of the Confederacy was severed. Cos. A to K, some heavy and some light artillery. -Co. A served temporarily as 1st Co. K, 32nd Regt., N.C. Infantry in 1861. Co. B, first M/in 31st Regt. N.C. Infantry, for 12 mos., but reenlisted for war and assigned to 3rd Regt. Artillery Co. E appears to have been assigned in 1861 as Col. D, 36th Regt. N.C.T., but did not serve. (1st) Co. G was disbanded by S.O. 209, Army of Northern Va., Oct 4, 1862, and 55 men transferred to Co. A, 1st Regt. N.C. Artillery and the remainder to Co. D, 1st Regt. N.C. Artillery (2nd) Co. G became Co. E, 13th Battalion N.C. Light Artillery, by S.O. 66, AGO, N.C., Nov 4, 1863. (3rd) Co. G was formerly Capt. Herring's Co. I, 2nd Regt. N.C. Artillery Transferred to this Regt. by S.O. 66. (old) Co. H was transferred to the 13th Battallion N.C. Artillery as Co. F by S.O. 66. (new) Co. H was formerly (old) Co. A, 2nd Regt. N.C. Inf. Its members were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Alexander, Cabarrus, Rowan, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Nash, and Wake. The unit took an active part in the fight at New Bern, and then advanced to Virginia. It was assigned to General Branch's, Law's, and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. After fighting at Hanover Court House, it participated in the various campaigns of the army from the Seven Days Battles to Cold Harbor, and then was involved in the Siege of Petersburg south and north of the James River. The regiment sustained 51 casualties at New Bern, 253 out of the 450 engaged during the Seven Days Battles, 69 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 52 at Sharpsburg, and 86 at Fredericksburg. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

They missed the early battles in Virginia and Getttysburg, then were in Virginia for the later battles of 1863 and 1864, but returned to North Carolina and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.In June, 1862 it moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, and guarded prisoners captured in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Later the unit served in North Carolina at Tarboro, along the Chowan River, and at Wilmington. Assigned to General Martin's and Kirkland's Brigade, it fought at Cold Harbor, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war with the Army of Tennessee.The regiment arrived at Bentonville on 18 March, and spent the night without fires and under orders to remain quiet. Company K consisted of 4 officers, the First Sergeant and 24 privates (numbers approximate) On 19 March, the 42nd NCT, as part of the brigade, covered the deployment of the Johnson's army at Bentonville. Returning to the division line of battle, near the center of the Confederate position, the brigade helped repulse the early Federal attacks, and participated in the Confederate assault on the Morgan's division of the XIV Corps. On 20 March, Kirkland's Brigade successfully defended from its hasty entrenchments on the division's right (just south of the "Devil's Racepath"), then withdrew with the army to the north on 22 March. Company K, 42nd NCT reported no losses at Bentonville. The brigade passed through Raleigh on 11 April, Durham on 13 April, marching on through Chapel Hill west toward High Point. By 26 April, the 42nd NCT was with Kirkland's Brigade at Center Church in Randolph County, three miles from High Point, where it was disbanded on 2 May.Company "A"-Capt. Jacob H. Companes A, C, D, and E served in the Army of Northern Virginia and took part in the campaigns of that army. Only 1 man was present at Appomattox. Companies B, G, H, and I served in North Carolina. Company H disbanded sometime after the fight at Plymouth, and Companies B, G, and I surrendered with the Army of Tennessee as infantry. Company F was captured at Fort Fisher and Company K was stationed at Weldon, North Carolina and disbanded during the winter of 1864-1865. Infantry, consisting of seven companies (Crute says the 6th Infantry Battalion), was organized about Aug, l, 1862. The men were recruited in Asheville and the four counties of Madison, Buncombe, and Polk, and a small number were from Tennessee. McDowell's Battalion was increased to a Regiment about Oct. 8, 1862, and designated the 60th Regt. N.C. Infantry It was assigned to Preston's, Stovall's, Reynolds', Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade. The 60th fought at Murfreesboro, served in Mississippi, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Bentonville. The 60th North Carolina lost 3 killed, 65 wounded, and 11 missing at Murfreesboro, and in January, 1863, had 276 men present for duty. The unit reported 8 killed, 36 wounded, and 16 missing of the 150 engaged at Chickamauga, totalled 106 men and 59 arms in December, 1863, and mustered a force of 106 in January, 1865. Few surrendered in April. Book excerpt: "The South Carolina 18th Heavy Artillery Battalion [often called the Siege Train Artillery Battalion or Manigault's Battalion] was organized during the spring of 1862 with three companies. Many of the men were from Charleston. Company D was assigned later in 1862. It was assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and fought at Fort Sumter, Grimball's Landing, Battery Wagner, James Island, and John's Island. In June, 1864, Company C was transferred to Pegram's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia and was active in the Petersburg siege. Bridges' Louisiana Artillery Battery was merged into Company D in December 1864. That December Company C returned to the battalion which later served as infantry in the Army of Tennessee. The unit was surrendered by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at Durham Station, Orange County, NC on April 26, 1865."--
