Events happen, and the true record of them follows at a distance. Sometimes the early report is too voluminous, and it takes time to reduce it to truth by a winnowing process that divides chaff from grain. This has been the case regarding every great modern battle. Sometimes, on the other hand, the event was obscure and became important through the rise of other, later conditions; in which case, instead of winnowing. The historian sets himself to glean ing the field and making his grist out of Scattered bits of its fruitage. This has been the case regarding the Chi cago massacre of 1812. It was only a skirmish and a slaughter, involving the loss of three score lives. But those dead men, women and children were the fore-runners of all the dwellers in one of the greatest cities of Christendom, the renowned City of Chicago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daniel Trentworthy: A Tale of the Great Fire of Chicago Human history must deal with human interest. Events thought to be unimportant in their day may tower up with the ages - as the death of Shakespeare. Events great as a royal marriage may be buried as deeply in a library as they could be inhumed in oblivion; for what is oblivion but lack of interest by the living? All is for the living; nothing for the dead. Let us then deal candidly with events, subjectively as to their merits, objectively as to the interest they arouse, at once and forever. By that means we may perhaps claim that in three centuries there have been but three events in the first class of human interest - namely: Seventeenth century, the works and death of Shakespeare. Eighteenth century, the French Revolution. Nineteenth century, the destruction of Chicago. I shall tell a simple tale of the nineteenth century which may hold the reader's attention because of the august presence of a kingly event. I shall ask the man of keen sympathy and sound imagination to pass through days that must seem longer than days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago, Its History and Its Builders, Vol. 1: A Century of Marvelous Growth As the French say, the secret of wearying isto say all, which, if indeed it is in some measure accomplished, results in a compendium of tedious prolixity. Any one who has investigated any period, says Rhodes, knows how the same facts are told over and over again, in different ways, by various writers, and among them all one must choose from the mass of verbiage and make condensations. Thucydides, the famous Greek historian, wrote a history of the Peloponnesian war covering a period of twenty - four years. This history is a model of com pressed narrative, and in his time there was little or no help to be derived from written documents. Of the events of the war, wrote Thucydides, I have not ventured to speak from any chance information, nor according to any notion of my own; I have described nothing but what I either saw myself, or learned from others of whom I made the most careful and particular inquiry. The task was a laborious one, because eye witnesses of the same occurrences gave different ac counts of them, as they remembered or were interested in the actions of one side or the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discovery and Conquests of the North-West: With the History of Chicago While these conditions have grown upon us in our progress down the highways of time, we have laid upon ourselves heavy burdens by premature legislation, not unlike those of the erratic sallies of childhood. Wiser counsels must come to our rescue to make amends for these, just as the well-digested thoughts of maturity recast the images of youth. Breathing time has now come to view the ground over which we have traveled, doubly endeared to us, because we ourselves were the first to take possession of it, and because we fashioned its institutions after our own model. That our history rises in importance as we assume larger proportions in the body politic, is manifested by the eagerness with which every thing pertain ing to the early records of the West is sought after, and by the increasing number of Historical Societies springing up through out the country, for the preservation of these precious relics. The rival interests of nations, complicated with religious and social conditions, produce war, and the province of the historian is not circumscribed to the details of the battle-field. These are but the means by which the passions and sympathies of nations achieve their ends. Hence, history, without reference to issues and contingencies, is only a bundle of facts, packed into the leaves of a book too tightly for the wedge of inquiry to let light shine between them. If the historian has failed to introduce to his readers the motive power that lets loose the dogs of war, his book will be like the play of Hamlet with Hamlet left out. That history has taken the first place in literature, is due to the exhaustless character of its subjects, among which may be found truths which foreshadow the future from the past, and leave a more abiding impression than the teachings of fiction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago Yesterdays: A Sheaf of Reminiscences The historian sifts and sifts through his sieve, and from the residue - that which is too thick and solid to go through his meshes - he constructs his story. In this book we lovers of Chicago have done differently. Only that which would slip through the sieve is here offered the reader. Truth lies in the dust that the scholar rejects as well as in the solid nuggets he gathers. From this dust we hope to reconstruct for your delectation at least a vision, a mirage of the simple, hard-working, every-day existence of the men and women of yesterday whose dutiful, industrious lives bequeathed to us of to-day one of the wonders of this age. Fourth city on the globe in point of size as the census goes, Chicago is second to none in importance as the great market of the western and eastern hemispheres. Reapers made in Chicago reap the grains of Siberia and the Argentine. Products of Packingtown support life at the North and South Poles, and in the loneliest, remotest of the Polynesian isles. Steel from our great mills forms the skeletons of ships on the seven seas, and the rails of transcontinental railways in distant countries. The strenuous industrial and commercial present is reflected in the city's social life. The families of the men at the head of the vast enterprises, which are the sources of the city's power, are the directing force in Chicago's society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Chicago The best a historian can do is to approach accuracy before venturing upon publication; and, after publication, - to approach it more and more nearly; for to reach it is beyond his utmost scope. The degree in which he can do this latter is dependent on the trouble his readers may take in pointing out to him his errors of omission and commission. "A word to the wise is sufficient;" and these words are addressed to all who are interested enough to read, wise enough to criticise and friendly enough to correct, for the benefit of posterity, this "Story of Chicago." Through the kindness of friends, some valuable additions, emendations and corrections are possible in this Second Edition. It is hoped that others may be kindly furnished for future use.
