Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2006 Catholic Press Association Award Winner After suffering an eclipse during the post-Vatican II liturgical reform, popular piety has regained its vital role in the spiritual life of Catholics. In response to its re-emergence, the Congregation for divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy on December 17, 2001. The Directory was written for bishops and their collaborators as a pastoral guide addressing the relationship between liturgy and popular piety. Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy: Principles and Guidelines, A Commentary by Peter C. Phan provides a chapter-by-chapter commentary on the Directory, summarizing its contents, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses, and offering suggestions on how devotional practices can be implemented in the United States. For liturgists, religious educators and students, pastoral leaders, and other interested Christians, this volume is helpful toward promoting a vigorous and authentic devotional life in the community, while respecting the preeminence of liturgical worship. The Commentary begins with a preface by Peter C. Phan and an introduction by James Empereur, entitled Popular Piety and the Liturgy: Principles and Guidelines." Chapters in Part One: Emerging Trends: History, Magisterium, Theology are *Liturgy and Popular Piety in a Historical Perspective, - by Mark R. Francis; *Liturgy and Popular Piety in the Church's Magisterium, - by Peter Fink; and *Theological Principles for an Evaluation and Renewal of Popular Piety, - by Nathan Mitchell. Chapters in Part Two: Guidelines for the Harmonization of Popular Piety with the Liturgy are *The Liturgical Year and Popular Piety, - by Keith F. Pecklers; *Veneration of the Holy Mother of God, - by Joyce Ann Zimmerman; *Veneration of the Saints and Beati, - by Rail Gomez; *Suffrage for the Dead, - by Peter C. Phan; *Shrines and Pilgrimages, - by Ana Maria Pineda. Concludes with a bibliography that presents the most significant recent writings on popular piety and liturgy, by Robert Brancatelli. Peter C. Phan, PhD, is the Ignacio Ellacuria Professor of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University. "

PAUL DOUGLASS WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AND CHARTS NEW SJr YORK GEORGE H. DORAN COMPANY INTRODUCTION THE SURVEY AND THE CITY SURVEY MOTIVE The basic reason for a survey of any city is the difficulty which practical men find in determining what is wise and right amid the confusions of so vast and complicated a phenomenon of civilization. This difficulty includes the church. The churches of St. Louis have long been aware of it. This Survey is primarily the result of their attempt to meet and conquer it. 1 The church has long been acutely conscious of its urban problem, has spoken much of it in general terms, has defined some of its typical problems those for example of the foreigner, of the down town section, of transient population, and of the rural emigrant has had many heart-searchings on the desertion of the most needy population by Protestantism, and has ended with something of the sense of awe and bafflement which beset the rurally-minded Hebrew prophet, Jonah That great city who is sufficient for it and how shall the church learn to serve and to master it at once Here and there, to be sure, exist shining examples of con spicuously successful city churches. But no one knows how to transfer the secret of their success to other situations. The analysis of the situation into its permanent elements is incomplete. The science of city churchmanship does not exist. Very little indeed is at hand constituting a dependable basis for action, very little that shows how to make a local church program which shall be funda mental rather than temporary or imitative which shall grow out of an understanding of urban people and situations and not depend upon the fluctuation and risks of personal insight. Yet in the city of St. Louis alone there are nearly four hundred Protestant churches continuously engaged in making decisions. Their pastors plan, their boards of deacons and trustees confer, their congregations debate and finally vote. These discussions involve a wide range of problems, and the decisions ought to be made only in the light of well-ascertained facts. 1 For a hiitoricml narrative of the Survey in detail tee Appendix, Section 1. V vi INTRODUCTION Shall a church be organized Where shall it build and what sort of a building shall it have What types of service shall it attempt When once established what changes of program will it need to consider How shall it secure funds Ought it perhaps to move How should it cooperate with its neighboring churches and in what specific place ought it serve the community These are not academic problems but simply the types of specific issues that are always coming up. Almost all of them involve decisions in the denominational realm as well as within that of the local congregation. Denomina tional policy has to decide when there shall be another church where it shall be located how it should get its building where the funds are to come from how it should be related to the other churches of the same community and what effect a given major policy or critical decision, such as that of removing a church, will have upon the fortunes of the ecclesiastical group. National denominational policies are involved, both on the finan cial side and in regard to strategy, because cities are centers in which church work is keenly watched by national leaders. At the same time the other constructive forces of the city the several denominations as cooperators or competitors, the social agencies doing work which lies near to that of the church all of these and the welfare of them all are involved, implicitly or ex plicitly, in the decision of these manifold practical issues. Finally, as the church in its great divisions, Catholic, Protestant and Hebrew, seeks to relate itself to the total life of humanity, the major decisions of churchmanship touch and are sometimes merged with the great constructive purposes of the city as a whole...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.

Book excerpt: Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them "Thoughts on Style in Architecture", "Architecture's Place in Modern Aesthetics", and "Art and Society", this volume presents a chapter in the history of European modernism. In his introduction, Iain Boyd Whyte demonstrates that the substantial contribution of Berlage's designs to modern architecture cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the aesthetic principles first laid out in his writings.

Book excerpt: The first edition of Lesser Feasts and Fasts was authorized more than 40 years ago to meet a liturgical and pastoral need for the commemoration of various saints and occasions not included as major Holy Days on the calendar of the Book of Common Prayer. Subsequent editions have been updated regularly to include biographical and liturgical material for new commemorations authorized for permanent or trial observance by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. This edition contains material approved for trial use by the 2006 General Convention. Among the names presented are Oscar Romero, Roman Catholic Bishop of El Salvador and martyr; James Theodore Holly, first African-American bishop in the Episcopal Church; and Vida Scudder, educator and reformer.
