Book Synopsis Botswana – A Modern Economic History by : Ellen Hillbom
Download or read book Botswana – A Modern Economic History written by Ellen Hillbom and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with Mauritius, Botswana is often categorized as one of two growth miracles in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to its spectacular long-run economic performance and impressive social development, it has been termed both an economic success story and a developmental state. While there is uniqueness in the Botswana experience, several aspects of the country’s opportunities and challenges are of a more general nature. Throughout its history, Botswana has been both blessed and hindered by its natural resource abundance and dependency, which have influenced growth periods, opportunities for economic diversification, strategies for sustainable economic and social development, and the distribution of incomes and opportunities. Through a political economy framework, Hillbom and Bolt provide an updated understanding of an African success story, covering the period from the mid-19th century, when the Tswana groups settled, to the present day. Understanding the interaction over time between geography and factor endowments on the one hand, and the development of economic and political institutions on the other, offers principle lessons from Botswana’s experience to other natural resource rich developing countries.

Download or read book Past Caring written by Emily D. Cahan and published by National Center for Children in Poverty. This book was released on 1989 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph focuses on early forms of preschool care and education, the professions and children in the 1920s and 1930s, the federal role in a series of crisis interventions, and social and intellectual changes affecting early education in the 1960s and 1970s. The rise of a two-tier system for care and education of the preschool child is addressed first. On one hand, a nursery school and kindergarten system for middle-income children developed into one whose primary focus was to supplement enrichment available at home. These nursery schools and kindergartens were held together as a system by their aim of educating and socializing the growing child. On the other hand, a childminding or day care system for low-income children developed in response to the necessity of maternal employment outside the home. The report examines consequences of the stratified system of preschool care and education for poor children and their families. The most important of these was the stigmatization of child care as a function of social welfare. It is concluded that various "suitable home" eligibility requirements established for applicants of social welfare benefits have caused minorities (especially blacks) to be consistently excluded from the system. Over 100 references are cited. (RH)

Book Synopsis Unofficial Ambassadors by : Donna Alvah
Download or read book Unofficial Ambassadors written by Donna Alvah and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As thousands of wives and children joined American servicemen stationed at overseas bases in the years following World War II, the military family represented a friendlier, more humane side of the United States' campaign for dominance in the Cold War. Wives in particular were encouraged to use their feminine influence to forge ties with residents of occupied and host nations. In this untold story of Cold War diplomacy, Donna Alvah describes how these “unofficial ambassadors” spread the United States’ perception of itself and its image of world order in the communities where husbands and fathers were stationed, cultivating relationships with both local people and other military families in private homes, churches, schools, women's clubs, shops, and other places. Unofficial Ambassadors reminds us that, in addition to soldiers and world leaders, ordinary people make vital contributions to a nation's military engagements. Alvah broadens the scope of the history of the Cold War by analyzing how ideas about gender, family, race, and culture shaped the U.S. military presence abroad.
