Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Biographical Papers, Vol. 1 Our own community was long blessed by the presence of one of these exceptionally pure and beneficent lives, - one among the most eminent and useful of all that class of men; and now that he has been removed from among us, and while the light, which death alone sheds, still illummes his career and throws back upon his character that charm which invests the recollection of a cherished object when lost, we are prompted, by a sentiment, both just to the dead and ennobl'ing to the living, to commemorate his virtues and great services. Doubtless, this tribute of our respect - labor as we may to perfect it - will leave us with a sense of still undischarged obligation for his services, and of unexpressed or ill-expressed reverence and admiration for his virtues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Historical and Literary, Vol. 1 The material in this volume was intended, by the Author, to be embodied in a greater work, A History of the American People. Many of these chapters were given by him as lectures in every part of our broad country, always enlarging and strengthening the bond of friendship with his people - who freely gave him such personal opinions, letters, and private documents as aided him in perfecting his historical work. Some of these letters, of especial significance, I have here included as notes. Through the courtesy of D. Appleton & Company, I am enabled to reproduce in the essays - Charles Lee, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, and Daniel Webster - biographical passages written by the Author for the Encyclopaedia of American Biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of the Past, Vol. 1 of 2: Some Biographical Essays If I were engaged in estimating his character, it would be necessary to linger on this disagreeable subject, and to inquire what weight ought to be given to it in balancing his faults against his virtues. I cannot, however, make it too clear that I am not engaged in estimating his character. That was done very well, more than a generation ago, by the late Lord Stanhope in his History, and by Mr Hayward in an Essay, which has been reprinted. My object is, as I have said, a purely practical one to examine, namely, how far his Letters to Ms Son can be made useful at the present day, and it fortunately happens that all his bad morality may, for that particular purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Printing in America, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Biography of Printers, and an Account of Newspapers; To Which Is Prefixed a Concise View of the Discovery and Progress of the Art in Other Parts of the World There is implanted in man by the allwise Creator, a principle which stimulates him to invention, and produces a desire to communicate his discoveries to his contemporaries and to posterity. With this natural disposition to invent, and then to reveal the products of his ingenuity, is connected an Insatiable curiosity to become acquainted with the origin and history of every discovery made by his fellow men. In no condition of man are the first principles of the arts and sciences unknown which circumstance demonstrates that the efforts of invention arise from natural propensities, perpetually stimulated by his desire to render his Works more perfect and useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Papers of Randolph Abbott Shotwell, Vol. 1 Naturally Shotwell was not loved by his opponents. Apart from other considerations, he had proved himself too dangerous and too unrelenting an enemy. Becoming a real political force, he won the undying enmity of the Radicals of Cleveland and Rutherford counties, and it was certain that they would spare no efforts in his undo ing. The later tragedy of his life was largely due to the hatreds which he now aroused. In 1869 he went to Asheville and established the Citizen, buying for the purpose the printing plant of the defunct News. He had a wider field here and the circulation of his paper increased rapidly, and its influence grew apace. But in Spite of its growth, it did not pay, and he sold it on July 18, 1870, and returned to Rutherfordton and began once more to read law, keeping, however, an attentive eye on public affairs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guardian, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Biographical, Historical, and Critical Preface In the progress of the work, Addison furnished his friend with the principal assistance; but whether by stipulation, or gratuitous kindness, is uncertain. His papers in general are not marked with that depth of sentiment, and richness of humour, which he displays in the Spectator, although they are sufficiently distinguished with the grace and faci lity which characterize his other writings. The jokes about the Lion are not very entertaining, and occur too frequently. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Papers, Vol. 1: Historical, Literary, Travel and Miscellaneous The Syndics of the Cambridge University Press having paid me the high compliment of offering to publish my Collected Papers, I have made a selection from my contributions to periodicals in the course of the last sixty years, or thereabouts, adding a few lectures or addresses not hitherto made public, at least in the form in which they were delivered. I have not thought it desirable to attempt to bring any of these Papers 'up to date, ' or to make any changes in them except such as were necessitated by unintentional misstatements of facts or by slips of diction. In a few instances, I have added an observation or two that seemed called for in the way of postscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Genealogical History of Morris County, New Jersey, Vol. 1 In the compilation recourse has been had to divers authorities, including various histories and historical collections, and implying an almost endless array of papers and documents, public, private, social and ecclesiastical. That so much matter could be gathered from so many original sources and then sifted and assimilated for the production of a single work without incurring a modicum of errors and inaccuracies, would be too much to expect of any corps of writers, no matter how able they might be as statisticians or skilled as compilers of such works. It is, nevertheless, believed that no inaccuracies of a serious nature can be found to impair the historical value of the volumes, and it is further believed that the results will supply the demand which called forth the efforts of the publishers and the editorial corps.
