These questions have been crucial since regulations for governance entered society and are found at the core of this volume. Arranged in thematic sections, the 14 essays in the collection bridge the divide between medieval and early modern to build up understanding of the developments and continuities that can be followed across the centuries in question. Whether crown or noble, government or church, burgh or merchant; all desired power and influence, but their means of representing authority were very different. These essays encompass a myriad of methods demonstrating power and disseminating the image of authority, including: material culture, art, literature, architecture and landscapes, saintly cults, speeches and propaganda, martial posturing and strategic alliances, music, liturgy and ceremonial display. Thus, this interdisciplinary collection illuminates the variable forms in which authority was presented by key individuals and institutions in Scotland and the British Isles. By placing these within the context of the European powers with whom they interacted, this volume also underlines the unique relationships developed between the people and those who exercised authority over them.

Book excerpt: Situated at a southern tip of Galloway, in the old county of Wigtownshire, the historic burgh of Whithorn is one of the oldest Christian sites in the UK. The origins of the settlement date back to the mid-fifth century AD and the first monastery may have been founded in the sixth century. Traditionally the monastery is the burial place of St Ninian. By the tenth or eleventh century a town-like settlement had developed around the monastic site and in 131215 this was relocated to the line of what is now George Street. At around the same time the community was created a burgh of barony for the prior of Whithorn. Pilgrimage was a very profitable activity for the town and the nearby settlement of Isle of Whithorn, a port for pilgrims and goods. The book examines Whithorns historic development from the earliest settlement through the medieval period, the significance of the priory, and its subsequent role as a small market town. The town has received very little archaeological investigation compared to that for the priory, and so the authors consider where the areas of archaeological potential lie, in order to inform the future management of Whithorns historic environment. Distinctive building types are identified and the characterisation of the town is mapped.

Book excerpt: Situated in the far south-west of Scotland, overlooking the Solway Firth, Whithorn is well-known as the site of an important early Christian monastery. The settlement was created a burgh of barony for the prior of Whithorn in the early fourteenth century. There were Christians living in the settlement at Whithorn by the mid-fifth century, and a monastery may have been founded on the priory site by the sixth century. By the eleventh century, a settlement of craftsmen and traders had grown up around this religious site. Like Tain in the north-east of Scotland, the site became a focus for pilgrimage, a profitable activity until the Reformation saw the banning of pilgrimages in 1581. In the post-medieval period the town's economy was based on cattle and agriculture, and a small amount of trade through the burgh's port at Isle of Whithorn.
