Download or read book Historic Capital written by Cameron Logan and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington, D.C. has long been known as a frustrating and sometimes confusing city for its residents to call home. The monumental core of federal office buildings, museums, and the National Mall dominates the city’s surrounding neighborhoods and urban fabric. For much of the postwar era, Washingtonians battled to make the city their own, fighting the federal government over the basic question of home rule, the right of the city’s residents to govern their local affairs. In Historic Capital, urban historian Cameron Logan examines how the historic preservation movement played an integral role in Washingtonians’ claiming the city as their own. Going back to the earliest days of the local historic preservation movement in the 1920s, Logan shows how Washington, D.C.’s historic buildings and neighborhoods have been a site of contestation between local interests and the expansion of the federal government’s footprint. He carefully analyzes the long history of fights over the right to name and define historic districts in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Capitol Hill and documents a series of high-profile conflicts surrounding the fate of Lafayette Square, Rhodes Tavern, and Capitol Park, SW before discussing D.C. today. Diving deep into the racial fault lines of D.C., Historic Capital also explores how the historic preservation movement affected poor and African American residents in Anacostia and the U Street and Shaw neighborhoods and changed the social and cultural fabric of the nation’s capital. Broadening his inquiry to the United States as a whole, Logan ultimately makes the provocative and compelling case that historic preservation has had as great an impact on the physical fabric of U.S. cities as any other private or public sector initiative in the twentieth century.

Download or read book Washington D.C. written by Thomas J. Carrier and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was passed in 1789, the Constitution set out the boundaries not only for a new government but for a new capital city as well. At the time, the new District of Columbia covered 5,000 acres, dominated by marshland on the south, pastureland on the area that is now the Mall, farms near the White House and Capitol Hill, and undeveloped woods throughout. Covering Capitol Hill, the Mall, the Old Downtown area, the Ellipse, Lafayette Square, and Foggy Bottom, this engaging photographic history and walking tour documents how the Federal City grew from farmland to world capital. Striking images and detailed captions tell the fascinating stories behind many of the famous and the not so famous buildings and monuments that cover the D.C. landscape, from Union Station and the Capitol to the White House and the Watergate Hotel and many important sites in between.

Download or read book On this Spot written by Douglas E. Evelyn and published by . This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the grandeur of the monuments, the highly-recognizable historic buildings, and the Mall area, Washington, to some, appears to be a theme park in which the past is neatly preserved, where America¿s political and governmental past is on display for all citizens, and where families can visit to gain a better understanding of their country. Washington, however, is more than a repository of Senate debates and Supreme Court decisions, more than an august national capital, and certainly far more than a theme park. It is a living, growing city, and for many decades it was a rough, dirty, and noisy place. In On This Spot: Pinpointing the Past in Washington, D.C, Fourth Edition., two highly-regarded, veteran authors, Doug Evelyn and Paul Dickson offer readers a rare look at the complete Washington in a very different kind of guidebook. Filled with maps, historical profiles of hundreds of sites, and over 140 illustrations, On This Spot, offers the reader an understanding of both Washington D.C., the nation¿s capital, and Washington, an American city. Covering such diverse elements as the Lincoln Memorial, the ¿Blue Jug,¿ the Gin Rickey, Federal Triangle, the Cairo Hotel, Griffith Stadium, the Library of Congress, and thousands of others, the authors offer the reader a unique and full understanding of the ¿complete¿ Washington. Not only a first-rate guidebook, but a history lover¿s delight--fun for all.

Book excerpt: "Metropolitan areas change over the time. These changes come together and create a city's character and personality. Renowned Washington, DC, historian James Goode has assembled an incredible collection of images that look back at a Washington before it developed into the international metropolitan city it is today. The impactful historic photography exposes the elements of the DC metro area that have disappeared- the dairy farms of Loudoun County, the railroad round house in Alexandria, and model boats on the Rainbow Pool on the National Mall, as well as provide startling different views of areas and neighborhoods that still exist. The majority of these images have never been published, and under the curatorial eye of James Goode have been put together in a way that give readers a better understanding of the city Washington DC was, and the city it was to become."
