Assim, esse campo de conhecimento tem sido provocado a repensar no campo educacional a discussão das relações raciais, fomentando de forma crítica a necessidade de novas interpretações, tanto em face à legislação educacional – como a Lei no 10639/03, que obriga o ensino de história e cultura afro-brasileira e africana nos sistemas de ensino público e privado – quanto pela necessidade de apontar suas consequências para o ensino brasileiro a partir das experiências de intervenção das entidades negras que discutem as desigualdades raciais. Dessa forma, este livro traz à tona a trajetória histórica da Pedagogia Interétnica, proposta e experimentada em Salvador no final da década de 70, do século XX, capitaneada pelo sociólogo Manoel de Almeida Cruz na constituição do Núcleo Cultural Afro-Brasileiro (NCAB). Nesse contexto, o autor deste livro demonstra os desafios políticos, teóricos e práticos no exercício de debater a história e a cultura de base africana no ambiente escolar e na cidade baiana. O mérito desta obra situa-se no processo em recolocar essa dimensão nas pesquisas universitárias, procurando dar visibilidade a um conhecimento produzido pelo Movimento Negro (MN) ao longo de sua trajetória histórica e cultural, ampliando novos questionamentos e reflexões, que contribuam de forma relevante para a sociedade e para a história da Educação brasileira no debate das relações raciais.

Chronicling the discourse among intellectuals and state officials during the period from the abolition of slavery in 1888 to the start of Brazil's military regime in 1964, Anadelia Romo uncovers how the state's nonwhite majority moved from being a source of embarrassment to being a critical component of Bahia's identity. Romo examines ideas of race in key cultural and public arenas through a close analysis of medical science, the arts, education, and the social sciences. As she argues, although Bahian racial thought came to embrace elements of Afro-Brazilian culture, the presentation of Bahia as a "living museum" threatened by social change portrayed Afro-Bahian culture and modernity as necessarily at odds. Romo's finely tuned account complicates our understanding of Brazilian racial ideology and enriches our knowledge of the constructions of race across Latin America and the larger African diaspora.
