Book excerpt: We study the long-term impact of climate change on economic activity across countries, using a stochastic growth model where labor productivity is affected by country-specific climate variables—defined as deviations of temperature and precipitation from their historical norms. Using a panel data set of 174 countries over the years 1960 to 2014, we find that per-capita real output growth is adversely affected by persistent changes in the temperature above or below its historical norm, but we do not obtain any statistically significant effects for changes in precipitation. Our counterfactual analysis suggests that a persistent increase in average global temperature by 0.04°C per year, in the absence of mitigation policies, reduces world real GDP per capita by more than 7 percent by 2100. On the other hand, abiding by the Paris Agreement, thereby limiting the temperature increase to 0.01°C per annum, reduces the loss substantially to about 1 percent. These effects vary significantly across countries depending on the pace of temperature increases and variability of climate conditions. We also provide supplementary evidence using data on a sample of 48 U.S. states between 1963 and 2016, and show that climate change has a long-lasting adverse impact on real output in various states and economic sectors, and on labor productivity and employment.

Chief among those men who struggled with the problems of Jewish consciousness were Moses Mendelssohn, David Friedlander, Leopold Zunz, Eduard Gans, and Heinrich Heine. By 1824, liberal Judaism had not yet produced a vision of it future as a separate entity within European society, but it had been exposed to and grappled with all the significant problems that still confront the Jew in the West.

The modern meat-type chicken is derived from the deep-breasted Cornish breed and has been selected with an emphasis on producing meat rather than eggs. Further processing of meat chickens has led to many new products geared to the convenienceminded consumer, such as boneless, skinless breasts. The turkey industry has developed strains of birds with an emphasis on meat production and breast size, as the white meat has a higher market value in the United States. Many pure breeds of poultry are raised for exhibition, hobby and/or breed preservation purposes. There is lots to discover with the comprehensive poultry production. We all know that in order to get the best out of birds, poultry keepers need to be up to date with the latest ideas and techniques. Because of increased Nazi terror larger numbers of Jews had begun to emigrate. The Cuban Director of Immigration had sold many landing permits wholesale to the Hamburg America Line, which resold these permits to individual Jews. A shift in Cuban policies invalidated the permits, but the line failed to inform the passengers. Thus when over 900 passengers arrived on the St. Louis at Havana, they were prevented from disembarking and forced to return to Europe. For the moment, they were saved by the unselfish actions of France, Holland, Belgium and Great Britain, which permitted the emigrants to land in their respective territories. Many of the documents selected for this volume are devoted to the St. Louis Affair. Others deal with similar landing problems, the emigration of 5000 Jewish children and obstacles to Jewish emigration created by the Nazis.
