Ante los resultados muy divergentes y no siempre satisfactorios, Rudolf Schnackenburg propone una nueva aproximación a la persona de Jesucristo, tanto en su dimensión de históricamente advenido como en la de su presencia perpetua al lado de Dios y dentro de la Iglesia. El autor analiza las diferentes perspectivas de la fe manifestadas en los cuatro Evangelios. cada una de ellas se apoya en tradiciones históricas determinadas que llevaron a una imagen cambiante de Jesucristo según la época y las modificaciones de las circunstancias socioculturales. De esta manera las bases históricas se integran en un cuadro global de la fe que, si bien se refleja de maneras diferentes en los cuatro Evangelios, permite reconocer, no obstante, una concepción común. Son precisamente los rasgos comunes de esta fe los que han orientado a la Iglesia a lo largo de los siglos y la siguen guiando en el presente.
