Book excerpt: The cause of many of the adverse reproductive outcomes and developmental diseases among offspring is not well understood. Most of the epidemiologic and experimental animal research has focused on the relationship between maternal exposures including medications, tobacco smoke, alcohol, infections, and occupation and the occurrence of spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, and birth defects. The potential role of paternal exposures has not been investigated as extensively despite long-standing animal research that demonstrates the induction of mutations in the male germ cell after exposure to certain agents and subsequent reproductive failure or early pregnancy loss. Given this relative lack of interest, acquisition of epidemiologic data and the development of a definitive model or mechanism for potential male-mediated effects has been hindered. However, recent laboratory and epidemiologic investigations have suggested that paternal exposures may be more important than previously suspected. This topic has been termed by some as "male-mediated developmental toxicity. " This is meant to refer to the effects of exposures and other factors relating to the male parent that result in toxicity to the conceptus and abnormal development. The developmental endpoints of interest can include fetal loss, congenital abnormalities, growth retardation, cancer, and neurobehavioral effects. These effects may operate through a variety of mechanisms including gene mutation, chromosomal aberrations, seminal fluid transfer of toxicants and epigenetic events.

Book excerpt: Human Adaptation to Spaceflight: The Role of Nutrition reflects a (brief) review of the history of and current state of knowledge about the role of nutrition in human space flight. We have attempted to morganize this from a more physiological point of view, and to highlight systems, and the nutrients that support them, rather than the other way around. We hope we have captured in this book the state of the field of study of the role of human nutrition in space flight, along with the work leading up to this state, and some guideposts for work remaining to be done and gaps that need to be filled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the International School of Radiation Damage and Protection at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Sci entific Culture in Erice, Italy, September 6-15, 1985. The sixth course of the School, entitled "Advances in Applications, Biological Effects, and Dosimetry of Ultrasound," provided an in-depth review of all facets of ultra sound interactions and their biological effects on living systems, allowing an assessment of the hazard potential of the various applications of ultra sound. Particular reference was made to possible health risks associated with medical ultrasound exposure since this use is by far the most prevalent. Since the initial application of ultrasound to submarine detection, medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications have become predominant over the past 20 years. The question of safety of this physical agent is an extremely important one. In many industrialized countries most pregnant women receive at least one diagnostic ultrasound examination before the birth of the child. Thus, potential hazards to the fetus are of prime concern. This problem has been aggravated by the fact that the medical diagnostic applications of ultrasound have far outpaced research efforts on biological effects. A further compounding factor of concern to clinicians and scientists has been the use of higher and higher intensities by the manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, particularly higher peak pulse intensities.

Book excerpt: This book is the second volume of two volumes on cyclodextrins published in the series Environmental Chemistry for a Sustainable World. This volume focuses on cyclodextrin applications. The first chapter by Divya Arora and Sundeep Jaglan presents cyclodextrin-based carriers for delivery of dietary phytochemicals. The second chapter by Éva Fenyvesi et al. describes the interactions of steroids with cyclodextrins and their applications to pharmaceuticals, food, biotechnology and environment. Nazli Erdoğar and Erem Bilensoy discuss cyclodextrin-based nanosystems in targeted cancer therapy. Miriana Kfoury et al. review the use of cyclodextrins for essential oils applications in chapter 4. Hiroshi Ikeda demonstrates in chapter 5 that chromophore-appended cyclodextrins are effective for chemosensors to detect organic molecules by fluorescence or absorbance changes. Then Grégorio Crini et al. describe silica materials-containing cyclodextrin for pollutant removal. The final chapter by Chang-Chun Ling et al. summarizes the synthesis and characterization of supramolecular liquid crystals based on cyclodextrins and their applications.
