Mais l'industrie subit des modifications des contraintes (augmentation de la concurrence des pays émergents, augmentation de la demande, augmentation des frais de R&D) qui la poussent à améliorer sa compétitivité. Des méthodes venant d'autres secteurs industriels plus compétitifs (construction automobile, aérospatiale, ect.) donne la possibilité aux entreprises qui les utilisent d'améliorer de façon spectaculaire leur compétitivité. Il en existe une, le Lean Six Sigma, qui est la combinaison du Lean Manufacturing et du Six Sigma. Dans cette combinaison, c'est la démarche projet qui est adoptée (DMAIC), la cartographie de la chaine de valeur du Lean qui est utilisée (VSM) puis tous les outils des deux méthodes servent ensuite à résoudre les problèmes qui ont une véritable valeur pour le client et d'établir un produit à la hauteur de ses exigences. Le Lean permet de supprimer le superflu, les gaspillages ("muda"s), de tendre les flux (réduire les délais de livraison), d'organiser le poste de travail (SMED, 5S, etc.) mais c'est surtout une philosophie. Grâce à des outils statistiques, sa démarche projet et son organisation, le Six Sigma permet de réduire à 3, 4 le nombre de défauts par million d'opportunités. Grâce à la mise en application des premières phases de la démarche projet du Lean Six Sigma sur le site de production de Dreux, les trois projets les plus prometteurs vont être lancés sur le site pour augmenter la compétitivité des laboratoires IPSEN®.

Grâce à la création de plusieurs groupes de travail et au soutien de l’équipe managériale, des outils provenant de la méthode Lean Six Sigma (type SMED, QQOQCP, standard work...) ont été utilisés, permettant sur une période de six mois d’obtenir un gain en capacité de production annuelle de plus de 200 heures, soit environ 25k€ de gain financier.
