Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Trade Unionism in Australia The scarcity of authoritative Australian books on economic, social and political problems has been severely felt during the development of the Workers' Educational Association in the Commonwealth. On the foundation of the Federal Council of the W. E. A. In 1918, a means of overcoming this difficulty was sought. Among the pro fessors, lecturers and tutors who have so readily assisted the tutorial class movement, some had collected valuable material bearing on these problems. Through the Federal Council it was thought possible to assemble this material for publication in a series of monographs intended for the use of students in tutorial classes and elsewhere. Thus has the W. E. A. Series of publications been founded, and it is hoped that its utility will extend beyond the immediate needs of the members of the W. E. A. To the growing number of students of social problems in Australia. The chief aim of the series being to encourage investiga tion in a field of study hitherto surprisingly neglected in Australia, the W. E. A. Does not accept responsibility for the views expressed by the writers therein. Its purpose is to stimulate thought, not to propagate doctrines. A dis claimer of this kind may appear odd in a preface, but our experience of the persistency with which our critics insist on attributing to the Association the opinions of those who happen to be connected with it, has convinced us that it is necessary. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s Australian unionism was on the flood tide: growing in strength, industrially confident and capable of shaping the overall political climate of the nation. Forty years on, union membership and power is ebbing away despite community support for trade unionism and the continuing need for strong unions. Even the unprecedented mobilisation against WorkChoices, which defeated a government and lost the prime minister his own seat, has done little to turn the tide. With compelling rigour, Tom Bramble explores the changing fortunes of what was once an entrenched institution. Trade Unionism in Australia charts the impact on unions of waves of economic restructuring, a succession of hostile governments and a wholesale shift in employer attitudes, as well as the failure of the unions' own efforts to boost membership and consolidate power. Indeed, Bramble demonstrates how the tactics employed by unions since the early 1980s may have paradoxically contributed to their decline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the AWU is a first-hand account of the making of a union and the makings of a nation. It depicts the industrial and political struggles of workers in the late 19th century, and explains the motivations behind the people who forged Australia’s most powerful and enduring blue-collar union. W. G. Spence was not only an observer of momentous events, he was also a leading participant in those events. With that in mind, Spence’s book is more than just a record of the circumstances that led to the creation of the AWU. It is also an expression of the ideals that inspired the Australian labour movement and a manifesto for future generations of Australian unionists. With a foreword by Paul Howes, an introduction by Graham Freudenberg and a biography of Spence by Professor Nick Dyrenfurth, the updated History of the AWU is essential reading for everyone interested in how Australia came to be the country that it is today. Spence’s history is the story of how misery and despair was transformed into hope and progress in Australia. Paul Howes Those of us who believe that a strong union movement is vital to the future success of the Australian Labor Party will welcome this new edition of History of the AWU by William Guthrie Spence. Graham Freudenberg Spence’s histories blazed a trail for later scholars. Indeed, no serious student of the labour movement can avoid his giant contribution. Nick Dyrenfurth

Book excerpt: Contends that it is simply not possible to gain a firm understanding of the way in which the Australian economy operates without having some appreciation of the role of the central trade union organization. An attempt is made in the first section to examine the behavior, authority, and influence of the ACTU both in various economic circumstances and over time. The second section is concerned with the economic philosophies and policies. The author also discusses the principal factors involved in the growth of the ACTU's influence and authority, including its relationship to Australian compulsory arbitration, the effect of a labor party's presence, its attitudes toward strikes, and the question of idealogy. A volume of traditional economic history that will be useful in studies of labor and politics, especially those of Australia.

Book excerpt: This innovative and comprehensive book is the first detailed study of the making and development of Australian peak unions. For over 150 years, peak unions have been central part of the Australian industrial relations landscape. They remain by far the most significant institutional form of inter-union cooperation in the country at the national, state, local and industry scales. They are remarkably varied bodies which have played vital roles in union growth and labour renewal. Some are strong, some weak and a select few have even come close to being unaccountable, a state within a state. This multi-author book systematically examines their nature and influence at different times, in different places. It adopts a unique combination of comparative method and conceptual insights from the fields of industrial relations, history, geography, organisational studies and political science. Its 13 chapters explore the whole range of peak unions and labour councils, from local bodies in Rockhampton, the Illawarra, Wagga Wagga and Broken Hill, through State councils in Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales, to the national peak union body, the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The book allies this empirical diversity with an essential theoretical cohesion. It opens with two conceptual chapters which develop a model for explaining the formation and changing purpose and power of peak unions, a model which resonates through all the subsequent chapters.
