Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Region of Pennsylvania North of the Ohio and West of the Allegheny River, of the Indian Purchases, and of the Running of the Souther, Northern, and Western State Boundaries: An Account of the Division of the Territory for Public Purposes, and of the Lands, Laws, Titles, Settlements, Controversies, and Litigation Within This Region Probably no part of Pennsylvania is more interesting in its history, settlement, titles, and protracted litigation than that portion lying north of the Ohio and west of the Allegheny River. A century having elapsed since its purchase of the Indians, and the passage of the laws regulating its appropriation and titles, few lawyers are living familiar with these subjects. The legislation peculiar to this region was unfortunate, and gave rise to contests which for many years retarded improvement, and rendered titles uncertain. It was my fortune to begin practice when lapse of time and the Statute of Limitations began to urge a final settlement of the disputes between the "warrantees" and the "settlers." In the winter of 1829-30 accident, or good fortune, threw into my hands the second volume of Charles Smiths edition of the Laws of Pennsylvania, containing his exhaustive note(156 pages) on the Land Laws. The study of this was my preparation for a large practice in land titles. In December, 1818, John B.Wallace, Esq., had conveyed a large body of land, in Beaver County, to the Farmers and Mechanics Bank of Philadelphia. It begins with the region's earliest days when the Delaware Indians were in residence and how the arrival of settlers, who ventured into this frontier area from Berks and Lancaster counties, marked the beginning of major changes. Synder's text, first published in 1976, has been expanded and updated to reflect newly discovered material on such groups as the Amish and the developments in Union County up to 2000. Distributed by Penn State University Press by arrangement with the Union County Historical Society.

Book excerpt: The Keystone State, so nicknamed because it was geographically situated in the middle of the thirteen original colonies and played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, has remained at the heart of American history. Created partly as a safe haven for people from all walks of life, Pennsylvania is today the home of diverse cultures, religions, ethnic groups, social classes, and occupations. Many ideas, institutions, and interests that were formed or tested in Pennsylvania spread across America and beyond, and continue to inform American culture, society, and politics. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the first comprehensive history of the Keystone State in almost three decades. In it distinguished scholars view Pennsylvania's history critically and honestly, setting the Commonwealth's story in the larger context of national social, cultural, economic, and political development. Part I offers a narrative history and Part II offers a series of "Ways to Pennsylvania's Past" -- nine concise guides designed to enable readers to discover Pennsylvania's heritage for themselves. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the result of a unique collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University Press and The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The result is a remarkable account of how Pennsylvanians have lived, worked, and played through the centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania once prospered. Today, very little mining or industry remains, although residents have made valiant efforts to restore the fabric of their communities. In The Face of Decline, the noted historians Thomas Dublin and Walter Licht offer a sweeping history of this area over the course of the twentieth century. Combining business, labor, social, political, and environmental history, Dublin and Licht delve into coal communities to explore grassroots ethnic life and labor activism, economic revitalization, and the varied impact of economic decline across generations of mining families. The Face of Decline also features the responses to economic crisis of organized capital and labor, local business elites, redevelopment agencies, and state and federal governments. Dublin and Licht draw on a remarkable range of sources: oral histories and survey questionnaires; documentary photographs; the records of coal companies, local governments, and industrial development corporations; federal censuses; and community newspapers. The authors examine the impact of enduring economic decline across a wide region but focus especially on a small group of mining communities in the region's Panther Valley, from Jim Thorpe through Lansford to Tamaqua. The authors also place the anthracite region within a broader conceptual framework, comparing anthracite's decline to parallel developments in European coal basins and Appalachia and to deindustrialization in the United States more generally.

Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.
