Book excerpt: IN the year of Our Lord 1340, it came to pass, that a Master in Holy Scripture preached oft-times in a certain city, and the people loved to hear him, and his teachings were the talk of the country for many leagues round. Now this came to the ears of a layman who was rich in God’s grace, and he was warned three times in his sleep that he should go to the city where the Master dwelt, and hear him preach. Now that city was in another country, more than thirty leagues distant. Then the man thought within himself, “I will go thither and wait to see what God is purposed to do or bring to pass there.” So he came to that city and heard the Master preach five times.

Book Synopsis A Victorian Curate by : David Yeandle
Download or read book A Victorian Curate written by David Yeandle and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greatly to be welcomed. This meticulously researched and richly documented account provides fresh insights into theological controversy and social prejudice and should be read by all serious students of the Victorian Church.Greatly to be welcomed. Richard Sharp The Rev. Dr John Hunt (1827-1907) was not a typical clergyman in the Victorian Church of England. He was Scottish, of lowly birth, and lacking both social connections and private means. He was also a witty and fluent intellectual, whose publications stood alongside the most eminent of his peers during a period when theology was being redefined in the light of Darwin’s Origin of Species and other radical scientific advances. Hunt attracted notoriety and conflict as well as admiration and respect: he was the subject of articles in Punch and in the wider press concerning his clandestine dissection of a foetus in the crypt of a City church, while his Essay on Pantheism was proscribed by the Roman Catholic Church. He had many skirmishes with incumbents, both evangelical and catholic, and was dismissed from several of his curacies. This book analyses his career in London and St Ives (Cambs.) through the lens of his autobiographical narrative, Clergymen Made Scarce (1867). David Yeandle has examined a little-known copy of the text that includes manuscript annotations by Eliza Hunt, the wife of the author, which offer unique insight into the many anonymous and pseudonymous references in the text. A Victorian Curate: A Study of the Life and Career of the Rev. Dr John Hunt is an absorbing personal account of the corruption and turmoil in the Church of England at this time. It will appeal to anyone interested in this history, the relationship between science and religion in the nineteenth century, or the role of the curate in Victorian England.

Book Synopsis The Life and Time of Reverend Dr. H. David Parker God's Visionary Ambassador by : Reverend Herbert David Parker
Download or read book The Life and Time of Reverend Dr. H. David Parker God's Visionary Ambassador written by Reverend Herbert David Parker and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reverend Herbert David Parker was a messenger for Christ for fifty-one years, and a friend to mankind. He was a living testimony that a man of God can be strong and yet still maintain humility. He often let the people know that he was just an instrument, used by God, pointing souls to Christ. His favorite Scripture was, "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16) He stood committed and dedicated to the word of God. Dr. Parker's life was one of dedication and commitment. Seven days of the week, you could find him telling others about the goodness of God, and sharing his life experiences. He was courageous in action and fervent in prayer; he did not alter God's Word. In this modern-day society, he would let us know that the wages of sin is still death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. As a pastor, he was the epitome of leadership. He always took time to compliment and encourage the little children, as he often did when he acknowledged their accomplishments. He was a man of character, integrity, dignity and honesty. His niece, E. Faye Wright, gave these expressions: "My Uncle Dave was an amazing man. His greatest quality, to me, was how personable he was. He was a very quiet person, yet his very presence spoke volumes. His excitement, when bringing the Word, was like a ripple effect throughout the room. It always left you wanting him to continue on, every time! I am blessed for the times we shared, our talks and laughs." "
