Book Synopsis Road to Faa’Imata 2022 by : Amelia Kinahoi Siamomua
Download or read book Road to Faa’Imata 2022 written by Amelia Kinahoi Siamomua and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faa‘imata represents the traditional home of Kava, a significant figure and source of Tongan culture. Thus, as in the legend of the origin of Kava, Faa‘imata connotes a place where great sacrifices have been laid to honour authority and yet also where kingly favours have been granted that covered shortcomings and inadequacies. More significantly, it marks a place where new beginnings and new legacies can sprout. Therefore the Road to Faa‘imata represents the many facets and multiple interpretations of the pathways and passages traversed by each of the Tonga High School ex-student featured. It represents an equalizer of sorts where students coming from diverse backgrounds and stations in society are provided with empowering opportunities to achieve outcomes that benefit Tonga, reflecting their capacity to absorb, critique and reapply what they have learnt.
Book Synopsis Social Structure, Space and Possession in Tongan Culture and Language by : Svenja Völkel
Download or read book Social Structure, Space and Possession in Tongan Culture and Language written by Svenja Völkel and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study investigates the relationship between culture, language and cognition based on the aspects of social structure, space and possession in Tonga, Polynesia. Grounded on extensive field research, Volkel explores the subject from an anthropological as well as from a linguistic perspective. The book provides new insights into the language of respect, an honorific system which is deeply anchored in the societal hierarchy, spatial descriptions that are determined by socio-cultural and geocentric parameters, kinship terminology and possessive categories that perfectly express the system of social status inequalities among relatives. These examples impressively show that language is deeply anchored in its cultural context. Moreover, the linguistic structures reflect the underlying cognitive frame of its speakers. Just as several cultural practices (sitting order, access to land and gift exchange processes) the linguistic means are not only expressions of stratified social networks but also tools to maintain or negotiate the underlying socio-cultural system."

Book Synopsis Tradition Versus Democracy in the South Pacific by : Stephanie Lawson
Download or read book Tradition Versus Democracy in the South Pacific written by Stephanie Lawson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much literature on non-Western traditions celebrates the renaissance of indigenous cultures. Others have been more critical of this renaissance, especially with respect to its political implications. This study analyses the assertion of 'tradition' by indigenous elites, looking especially at the way it is used to differentiate 'the West' from the 'non-West'. This is important to contemporary discussion about the validity of democracy outside the West and problems concerning universalism and relativism. The discussion of Fiji focuses on constitutional development and the traditionalist emphasis on chiefly legitimacy. The rise of the Pro-Democracy Movement in Tonga is considered against the background of a conservative political order that has so far resisted pressure for reform. The move to universal suffrage in Western Samoa is seen not as a rejection of traditional ways in favour of democratic norms, but as a means of preserving important aspects of traditional culture.
