Book excerpt: Brown-Eyed Girl is a collection of poems and photography born from the author's heartache, transformed into vulnerable and inspirational art. I have been many things in my life, but in my subconscious core, I've always been a writer. I've been telling stories and creating worlds for as long as I can remember. I wrote poems as a young girl, but it wasn't until the pandemic lockdown that I rediscovered this part of myself at the bottom of heartache. Overwhelmed with loneliness, poetry poured out of me. As my sadness faded, I shelved my poetry journal. Weeks later, mesmerized by the sun and inspired by joy, a poem meandered into my mind. I had been operating under the false belief that artists had to be in pain to create; realizing any emotion could create art was a revelation. Positive poems burst out of me. Months after that, an intuitive told me to bask in the bliss of the book I was writing. I told her I wasn't writing a book. One day, while writing a poem on the beach, I realized I rarely read my poems after writing them. I simply let them flow out of me and moved forward with my day, feeling a little lighter. Approximately 55 poems were in my journal, full of gladness and sorrow. I flipped to the very first page and read what I had written on March 18, 2020: A Book of Poems by TF. Chills covered my body: this was the book. Half of this book was born of longing when I was isolated during the shutdown, while the other half emerged from a place of happiness and power. Everyone is made of darkness and light; one cannot exist without the other. The contrast between them is what makes life meaningful. So much of the beauty in our lives is born of situations that, at the time, felt earth shattering. Brown-Eyed Girl is for everyone. If you've had a broken heart, been in love, felt something while reading poetry, are passionate about photography, or feel deeply, this book is for you. May my words and photos within these covers inspire you to look for love within yourself and to express gratitude for the beauty that surrounds each of us. I dare you to pick up a pen and write about your feelings, start your own self-care practice, chase your dreams, and live fully. I began writing poems to heal myself. That led to the realization this book had begun without my knowing, and here, to this very moment, you are holding its physical manifestation. Anything is possible. No aspiration is too big. Dream. Create. Believe.

Book excerpt: Brown Eyed Handsome Man: The Life and Hard Times of Chuck Berry draws on dozens of interviews done by the author himself and voluminous public records to paint a complete picture of this complicated figure. This biography uncovers the real Berry and provides us with a stirring, unvarnished portrait of both the man and the artist. Berry has long been one of pop music's most enigmatic personalities. Growing up in a middle-class, black neighborhood in St. Louis, his first major hit song, "Maybellene," was an adaptation of a white country song, wedded to a black-influenced beat. Thereafter came a string of brilliant songs celebrating teenage life in the '50s, including "School Day," "Johnny B. Goode," and "Sweet Little Sixteen." Berry's career rise was meteoric; but his fall came equally quickly, when his relations with an underage girl led to his conviction. It was not his first (nor his last) run in with the law. He scored his biggest hit in the early '70s with the comical (and some would say decidedly lightweight) song "My Ding-a-Ling." The following decades brought hundreds of nights of tours, with little attention from the recording industry. Bruce Pegg offers the definitive, though not always pretty, portrait of one of the greatest stars of rock and roll, a story that will appeal to all fans of American popular music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The never-before-told true story of Jane Elliott and the “Blue-Eyes, Brown-Eyes Experiment” she made world-famous, using eye color to simulate racism. The day after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968, Jane Elliott, a schoolteacher in rural Iowa, introduced to her all-white third-grade class a shocking experiment to demonstrate the scorching impact of racism. Elliott separated students into two groups. She instructed the brown-eyed children to heckle and berate the blue-eyed students, even to start fights with them. Without telling the children the experiment’s purpose, Elliott demonstrated how easy it was to create abhorrent racist behavior based on students’ eye color, not skin color. As a result, Elliott would go on to appear on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, followed by a stormy White House conference, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and thousands of media events and diversity-training sessions worldwide, during which she employed the provocative experiment to induce racism. Was the experiment benign? Or was it a cruel, self-serving exercise in sadism? Did it work? Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes is a meticulously researched book that details for the first time Jane Elliott’s jagged rise to stardom. It is an unflinching assessment of the incendiary experiment forever associated with Elliott, even though she was not the first to try it out. Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes offers an intimate portrait of the insular community where Elliott grew up and conducted the experiment on the town’s children for more than a decade. The searing story is a cautionary tale that examines power and privilege in and out of the classroom. It also documents small-town White America’s reflex reaction to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the subsequent meteoric rise of diversity training that flourishes today. All the while, Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes reveals the struggles that tormented a determined and righteous woman, today referred to as the “Mother of Diversity Training,” who was driven against all odds to succeed.

Van Morrison, says Greil Marcus, remains a singer who can be compared to no other in the history of modern popular music. When Astral Weeks was released in 1968, it was largely ignored. When it was re-released as a live album in 2009 it reached the top of the Billboard charts, a first for any Van Morrison recording. The wild swings in the music, mirroring the swings in Morrison's success and in people's appreciation (or lack of it) of his music, make Van Morrison one of the most perplexing and mysterious figures in popular modern music, and a perfect subject for the wise and insightful scrutiny of Greil Marcus, one of America's most dedicated cultural critics. This book is Marcus's quest to understand Van Morrison's particular genius through the extraordinary and unclassifiable moments in his long career, beginning in 1965 and continuing in full force to this day. In these dislocations Marcus finds the singer on his own artistic quest precisely to reach some extreme musical threshold, the moments that are not enclosed by the will or the intention of the performer but which somehow emerge at the limits of the musician and his song.
