Book excerpt: The Englishwoman’s Review, which published from 1866 to 1910, participated in and recorded a great change in the range of possibilities open to women. The ideal of the magazine was the idea of the emerging emancipated middle-class woman: economic independence from men, choice of occupation, participation in the male enterprises of commerce and government, access to higher education, admittance to the male professions, particularly medicine, and, of course, the power of suffrage equal to that of men. First published in 1985, this fifth volume contains issues from 1872. With an informative introduction by Janet Horowitz Murray and Myra Stark, and an index compiled by Anna Clark, this set is an invaluable resource to those studying nineteenth and early twentieth-century feminism and the women’s movement in Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nurse, or Hints on the Care of the Sick: Including Mothers and Infants, and a Digest of Domestic Medicine The author not long since was sought for, by the husband of a lady in labor; but, professional duty having called him away from his office, he was not readily found. In the abscence of the husband the nurse, in whose charge he had left his wife, became needlessly frightened, and fled for help, leaving the patient to suffer the pangs of maternity alone. Upon the husband's return, accompanied by myself she was found to be a mother, with nobody at hand to render her assistance. How much encouragement and comfort the poor woman would have realized from a calm, firm companion! This incident pointedly illustrates the absolute necessity of assurance as a qualification for a successful nurse. She, then, should have age to give her that assurance, and yet not be so Old as to make her unable to render prompt assistance. She must possess the quick eye to see, and to anticipate wants. If the patient is obliged to ask for everything he wishes, he will soon loose confidence in his nurse, and feel indis posed to trust her in anything. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints and Helps for Home Nursing and Hygiene This book is written in the hope that it may be of assistance to all who have to nurse the sick. The arrangement is in conformity with the Syllabus of the Home Nursing Lectures of the St. John Ambulance Association. Although arranged in this form, it is more than a book of lectures, as the subjects are dealt with in fuller detail than could be done by a lecturer in a short course. It is felt that what the members of ambulance classes should have in their hands is, not a book of lectures to compare with those they are listen ing to, but a book of reference, where they can find out what they have forgotten, and get further particulars when desired. Book excerpt: Notes on Nursing: What it is and What it is Not is a book first published by Florence Nightingale in 1859 which was intended to give hints on nursing to those entrusted with the health of others. Florence Nightingale stressed that it was not meant to be a comprehensive guide from which to teach one's self to be a nurse but to help in the practice of treating others. In her introduction to the 1974 edition, Joan Quixley, then head of the Nightingale School of Nursing, wrote that despite the passage of time since Notes on Nursing was published, "the book astonishes one with its relevance to modern attitudes and skills in nursing, whether this be practised at home by the 'ordinary woman', in hospital or in the community. The social, economic and professional differences of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in no way hinder the young student or pupil from developing, if he or she is motivated to do so, its unchanged fundamentals by way of intelligent thought and practice". "With its mid-nineteenth century background of poverty, neglect, ignorance and prejudice the book was a challenge to contemporary views of nursing, of nurses and of the patient". "The book was the first of its kind ever to be written. It appeared at a time when the simple rules of health were only beginning to be known, when its topics were of vital importance not only for the well-being and recovery of patients, when hospitals were riddled with infection, when nurses were still mainly regarded as ignorant, uneducated persons. The book has, inevitably, its place in the history of nursing, for it was written by the founder of modern nursing". The book included advice and practices ventilation and warming, health in houses, petty management (how things are done by others when you must be away), noise, variety (environment), taking food and what kinds of food, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness of rooms, personal cleanliness, chattering hopes and advices (the false assurances and recommendations of family and friends to the sick), observation of the sick. Florence Nightingale, author of Notes on Nursing, was a celebrated English nurse, writer and statistician. An Anglican, Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world, now part of King's College London. The Nightingale Pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honor, and the annual International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday.
