Book excerpt: The role of press in the development of political consciousness varies with the social classes to which it communicates the press as now constituted in India is geared to preserve the status-quo which is heavily weighted in favour of the owners of the means of production ; it protects their rights, promotes their interests and fortifies their political organisations. There are two approaches which explain political participation/consciousness the functionalist and the Marxist. However, the central premise of the books is that of reconciling the two major approaches of media communication. The functionalist consider voting as the main index of political consciousness, while the Marxist hold that political consciousness is a product of social history associated with the development of productive forces and is sharpened with the contradiction between the forces and relations of production. Accordingly, the functionalist give excessive importance to the press in the development of political consciousness is a product of its historical setting of the socio-economic configuration. The press only helps in the process of consolidation of political consciousness of the people under specific condition. In addition, the study gives a cogent account of the development of the Indian Press and contains useful data on ownership, control and circulation.

Book excerpt: This edited volume on Munda linguistics makes an important contribution in terms of analysing and demonstrating key issues such as Proto-Munda reconstruction, migration of Munda language speakers, and synchronic linguistic issues in Munda languages spoken in India. The contributions here reflect the diverse range of scholarship on Munda languages which combines empirical and theoretical discussion; the volume will be an extremely useful reference after a long gap in research on Munda languages and it will be useful not only for scholars interested in research on Munda languages, but also to those interested in typological studies and in documentary and field linguistics more generally. Moreover, this will be a major contribution to the understanding of the cultural and linguistic dynamics of South Asia as a linguistic area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on intensive ethnographic work in Romania and India conducted over six years, this book traces the struggle for social justice in Roma and Adivasi communities. Throughout centuries of persecution and marginalization, the Roma and Adivasi have been viewed as both victims and fighters, as royals and paupers, beasts and gods, and lately have been challenging the political and social order by defying the status quo. Different from commonly held suppositions that assume most marginalized and mobile communities typically resist the state and engage in hostile acts to undermine its authority, Power on the Move shows how these groups are willing to become full members. By utilizing different means, such as protests, sit-ins and grass roots organizing, they aim to gain the attention of the state (national and international), hoping to reach inclusion and access social justice.

Book excerpt: The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India is a four-volume ethnological study of the caste system written by Robert Vane Russell. The book is the result of the arrangement made by India's Government for the preparation of an ethnological account, dealing with the inhabitants of each of the principal Provinces of India. Although being a four-volume study, the study is basically divided in two parts. The first part, consisting of volume one, contains articles on the religions and sects of the people of the Central Provinces and the glossary of minor castes and other articles, synonyms, subcastes, titles and names of exogamous septs or clans. The second part, consisting of volumes two, three and four, contains descriptive articles on the principal castes and tribes of the Central Provinces.

Book excerpt: India is home to hundreds of tribal communities, each with their own unique cultures, traditions and ways of life. Among these are the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), who are identified as being at risk of losing their distinct identities, livelihoods and traditional practices. This book takes an in-depth look at the PVTGs residing in the state of Jharkhand through the analytical lens of anthropology. It consists of untold stories on its indigenous people as a tribute to their reliance, wisdom and unwavering Spirit. Through a chronological exploration, the book aims to understand the pivotal role played in shaping regional identity with political historicity, livelihood practices, indigenous knowledge, dynamic interest with local life and to investigate the indigenous’ contribution. The authors evaluate current policies related to the preservation and empowerment of PVTGs. The book highlights the urgent need to protect and uplift these ancient but vulnerable communities before their irreplaceable cultures are lost forever.
