Book excerpt: Love, Passion and Patriotism is an intimate account of the lives and experiences of a renowned group of young Filipino patriots, the men whose propaganda campaign was a catalyst for the country's revolt against Spain. As writers, artists, and scientists who resided in Europe, they were exposed to new ideas. Reyes uses their paintings, photographs, political writings, novels, and letters to show the moral contradictions inherent in their passionate patriotism and their struggle to come to terms with the relative sexual freedom of European women, which they found both alluring and sordid.

Book Synopsis Approaches to Teaching the Writings of Emilia Pardo Bazán by : Margot Versteeg
Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Writings of Emilia Pardo Bazán written by Margot Versteeg and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921) was the most prolific and influential woman writer of late nineteenth-century Spain," write the editors of this volume in the MLA's Approaches to Teaching World Literature series. Contending with the critical literary, cultural, and social issues of the period, Pardo Bazán's novels, novellas, short stories, essays, plays, travel writing, and cookbooks offer instructors countless opportunities to engage with a variety of critical frameworks. The wide range of topics in the author's works, from fashion to science and technology to gender equality, and the brilliance of her literary style make Pardo Bazán a compelling figure in the classroom. Part 1, "Materials," provides biographical and critical resources, an overview of Pardo Bazán's vast and diverse oeuvre, and a literary-historical time line. It also reviews secondary sources, editions and translations, and digital resources. The twenty-three essays in part 2, "Approaches," explore various issues that are central to teaching Pardo Bazán's works, including the author's engagement with contemporary literary movements, feminism and gender, nation and the late Spanish empire, Spanish and Galician identities, and nineteenth-century scientific and medical discourses. Film adaptations and translations of Pardo Bazán's works are also addressed. Highlighting the artistic, social, and intellectual currents of Pardo Bazán's writings, this volume will assist instructors who wish to teach the author's works in courses on world literature, nineteenth-century literature, and gender studies as well as in Spanish-language courses.
Book Synopsis Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Nation in Fin-de-siècle Spanish Literature and Culture by : Jennifer Smith
Download or read book Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Nation in Fin-de-siècle Spanish Literature and Culture written by Jennifer Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on intersections of race, class, and gender in the formation of the fin-de-siècle Spanish and Spanish colonial subject. Despite the wealth of research produced on gender, race (largely as it relates to the themes of nationhood and empire), and social class, few studies have focused on how these categories interacted, frequently operating simultaneously to reveal contexts in which dominated groups were dominating and vice versa.

Book Synopsis Anarchism, Science, and Sex by : Richard Cleminson
Download or read book Anarchism, Science, and Sex written by Richard Cleminson and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Frankfurt/M., New York, Wien. This study examines the reception of the controversia science of eugenics in Catalan and Valencian anarchist reviews in the early twentieth century, setting anarchist discourse on sexuality, theories of degeneration, inheritance and disease in the context of anarchism's own ideological framework, European sexology and eugenics itself. Drawing on a detailed analysis of the reviews Salud y Fuerza, Generacion Consciente and Estudios, the author suggests that some anarchists' acceptance of eugenic science was predicated upon their enthusiasm for science as 'objective knowledge' and 'scientia' as a form of cultural ascendancy vital to their revolutionary project. Anarchist eugenics, however, as articulated in these reviews, was not stable and shifted focus and scientific rationale over time and as new ideas came to the fore. The author shows how far the social and ideological concerns of anarchists constructed their form of eugenics and how eugenic science in turn helped to construct a form of anarchism which sought to incorporate sexological science into what anarchists believed was a radical sexual project for the age. Contents: Points of Departure - The Rise of Sexology and Eugenics in Spain and Europe - The Anarchist Engagement with Sexuality: early twentieth century neo-Malthusianism and the shift towards eugenics - Anarchism and Eugenics, 1923-1936 - Eugenics, Civil War and Social Revolution - Conclusion: The Limits of Anarchist Eugenics.
