Download or read book In-service Experience with Traffic Noise Barriers written by William Bowlby and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway environmental engineers, noise analysts, design engineers, maintenance personnel, planners, administrators, and others responsible for the design, selection, and maintenance of noise barriers or other traffic noise abatement policies. Information is provided on current state practice associated with noise abatement techniques and on the various products that are used. This synthesis describes the state of the art with respect to traffic noise abatement procedures, especially noise barriers. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the design, construction and maintenance of both new (Type I) and retrofit ( Type II) noise barriers. The design elements that are addressed include materials, the selection process, service life, foundations, drainage, aesthetics, and safety. The construction section covers technical problems related to surface effects, durability, snow damage, and costs. Other noise abatement measures such as insulation and highway design alternatives are also addressed. The issue of public demand and availability funding is included, and recommendations are made to improve the situation.

Book excerpt: "This report will be of interest to state DOT pavement engineers, environmental specialists, and noise analysts. The relationship between pavement surface texture and highway traffic noise is discussed. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search of both domestic and foreign publications."--Avant-propos.
Book Synopsis Highway Noise; a Design Guide for Highway Engineers by : Bolt, Beranek, and Newman
Download or read book Highway Noise; a Design Guide for Highway Engineers written by Bolt, Beranek, and Newman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods of assessing noise, loudness, and noise annoyance are reviewed and explained; sources, types, and intensities of traffic noise are noted; typical means of abatement and attenuation are described; design criteria for various land uses ranging from low-density to industrial are suggested and compared with the results of previous BBN and British systems for predicting annoyance and complaint; and a design guide for predicting traffic noise, capable of being programmed for batch and on-line computer applications, is presented in form suitable for use as a working tool. A flow diagram describes the interrelationships of elements in the traffic noise prediction methodology, and each element is discussed in detail in the text. The text is presented of a tape recording that takes the listener through a series of traffic situations, with such variables as traffic distance, flow velocity, distance, outdoors and indoors, and presence or absence of absorbers and attenuators.

Book Synopsis Guide on Evaluation and Attenuation of Traffic Noise by : American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Task Force for Environmental Design
Download or read book Guide on Evaluation and Attenuation of Traffic Noise written by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Task Force for Environmental Design and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide which was produced in an effort to consolidate and disseminate research information relating to traffic noise and develop guidelines for the abatement of traffic generated noise through highway design procedures and techniques, reviews the nature of noise and presents a systems approach to the attack of noise problems and its interrelated aspects. Some insight is provided into the problems faced by highway planners and designers and remedial measures are presented for noise reduction. Procedures are outlined which aid in conducting noise studies. Design features are described which aid in obtaining attenuation when studies indicate such measures are desirable and feasible. Several procedures for noise measurement are included in an appendix.
Book Synopsis Breaking Barriers by : Judith L. Rochat
Download or read book Breaking Barriers written by Judith L. Rochat and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common approach that state departments of transportation (DOTs) use to address highway traffic noise impacts is noise barriers--usually noise walls. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 984: Breaking Barriers: Alternative Approaches to Avoiding and Reducing Highway Traffic Noise Impacts presents the results of a review of innovative strategies to avoid and/or reduce highway noise impacts. A practitioner's handbook to identify which of these innovative strategies may be appropriate for a highway project is also included. Supplemental to the report are Appendices A through E, covering terminology, a summary of 14 noise-reducing strategies, and further investigations of low berms, solid safety barriers, and acoustically soft ground; strategy flowcharts; and a final presentation.

This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1998, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Natural Environment, released the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (FHWA TNM) Version 1.0, a state-of-the-art computer program for highway traffic noise prediction and analysis. Since then, the FHWA, with assistance from the Volpe Center Acoustics Facility (Volpe Center) and Foliage Software Systems (FSS), have released updates of TNM (Versions 1.0a, and 1.0b) in March 1999 and August 1999, respectively. In support of the FHWA and the California Department of Transportation, the Volpe Center and FSS released Version 1.1 in September 2000. TNM 2.0 is the latest release of the TNM software. Two companion reports were released with TNM Version 1.0, a Technical Manual that describes the acoustics within TNM and a User's Guide. In addition, prior to TNM release, a data report was published that describes the vehicle noise-emissions data base within TNM. This document is an addendum to the FHWA TNM Version 1.0 User's Guide. It details the enhancements in the program up to and including Version 2.0.

Download or read book Highway Noise written by B. Andrew Kugler and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1976 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A description of motor vehicle noise sources and the potential for their control is provided. The report presents an overview of the suggested noise prediction methodology, which is a four step process that includes approximating noise impacts using a nomograph procedure to determine noise levels associated with given traffic and site characteristics; refining these predictions by more accurate representation of design parameters and use of a computer program that is able to plot as well as calculate noise impact; introducing appropriate noise-control options and evaluate them, using a noise barrier nomograph solution; lastly, selected options are fully evaluated using the computer program.
