Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Signficantly reduced list price In the U.S., the response to an incident is regulated under many statues and many government agencies. It is important for responders to at least understand the basis of these regulations because they dictate everything, from how they manage a spill to the disposal of the spilt material. These regulations stipulate who should be notified and when it is not necessary, as well as what resources or assistance are available to local and state entities if the containment of a spill is beyond their capabilities. Book Synopsis Criteria for Highway Routing of Hazardous Materials by : Deborah K. Shaver
Download or read book Criteria for Highway Routing of Hazardous Materials written by Deborah K. Shaver and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to staff of state departments of transportation responsible for highway routing, traffic engineering, traffic operations and signing, and maintenance. It will also be useful to state police, who may also be responsible for routing, and other enforcement personnel, as well as to emergency and fire personnel. The trucking industry will also find the information of value to their operations. Information is presented on the current practices of states for the highway routing of vehicles that transport hazardous materials. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 1994 issued Guidelines for Applying Criteria to Designate Routes for Transporting Hazardous Materials, which are used by agencies that elect to designate such routes. This report of the Transportation Research Board is based on information obtained from a survey of states concerning the routing of hazardous materials vehicles that asked respondents to rate the importance of 24 factors in the categories of roadway, environment, population, or other criteria in establishing routing policy. The survey also identified the principal agencies responsible for routing, as well as other agencies that typically participate in the routing plan. Enforcement and cost issues are discussed, as is risk assessment. This report presents a unique discussion of the issues as identified by interviews with trucking trade associations and other organizations involved with hazardous materials transport. In addition, technology applicable to more effective monitoring and enforcement is described. The appendices include commodity flow studies and route designation case studies for selected jurisdictions.
Book Synopsis Hazardous Materials Emergencies by : John R. Cashman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is mostly structured around first-person interviews with nationally and locally recognized experts who have been in hazardous materials response for a number of years. To aid networking, the addresses and telephone numbers of all persons interviewed are listed at the end of each interview. The central narrative theme of the book has been to detail the actual methods, procedures, techniques, tactics, and "lessons learned" of specific hazardous materials response teams (HMRT) drawn from a number of different categories. The object is to have readers find a ready source to provide knowledge of what a teamed, trained, and equipped HMRT uses for methods, tactics, procedures, tools, vehicles, instruments, equipment, strategies, leak/fire/spill control, prevention, remedial actions, decision making, incidents, containment, or hazards. This book answers many questions for emergency responders that they may need to know tostay alive.
