Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of higher education in Australia at the end of the 1980s radically reshaped many existing universities. However, in South Australia, Dawkins's educational changes brought into existence an entirely new university, the University of South Australia, formed by the merging of two former institutions from the advanced education sector, the South Australian Institute of Technology and the South Australian College of Advanced Education. This volume first traces the unsuccessful path taken by those institutions to form partnerships with the two existing universities in South Australia. Having been rejected by Flinders and the University of Adelaide respectively the two former colleges joined forces and began life as a new university in a new system of higher education. Lacking research funding and access to higher degree students in its previous life, the new university nevertheless had considerable strengths which suited the new system, particularly in equity and links with business and the community. The story of the University of South Australia is one of the most successful of the Dawkins changes. After a shaky start its rapid rise to prominence in South Australia and beyond allows it to be truly seen as 'a new kid on the block' in Australian higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1987 John Dawkins, the Australian Government Minister for Employment, Education and Training released a Green Paper that foreshadowed major changes in the tertiary education sector through the formation of a Unified National System. This was 16 years after the establishment of Griffith University and only 12 years since the admission of Griffith’s first undergraduate students. Dawkins’ ideas presented Griffith University with a dilemma: whether to continue being different from other Australian universities—a boutique institution committed to ‘the Griffith way’ in pedagogy with a relatively small student enrolment and academic profile—or to become more like its academic peers and embrace growth and diversity. In only three years Griffith amalgamated with other academic institutions to become a multi-campus university, while still retaining some of its founding characteristics. Griffith emerged from the changes as a large and complex institution, different in ways that its founders could not have imagined. Coming of Age traces the impact on Griffith University of the creation of the Unified National system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It provides comprehensive coverage of developments in formal and informal education in Hong Kong from the end of 1941 to the beginning of the new millennium. As was true of its predecessor, each Part of this book is subdivided into three sections: Commentary, Chronicle, and Evidence. Such an organization facilitates flexible reading. Readers primarily interested in analysis, interpretation, and the identification of themes are likely to focus initially on the Commentary sections and to move, as they feel stimulated, to the relevant entries in the Chronicle and/or items of Evidence. Readers who seek either more encyclopedic understanding or detailed answers to specific questions may well wish to focus primarily or at least initially on the Chronicle sections, and then to search for substantiation in the Evidence section or for amplification in the author's Commentary. At times, some readers may wish to browse through the Evidence sections, reaching possibly serendipitous discoveries. Academic and general readers are likely to be particularly interested in Part I of the book, which deals with education in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation, a topic that has received only very rare and generalization-bound treatment in other publications. The author offers insights into all levels of education. His conceptual scope incorporates many types of education - including the mainstream academic education, technical education, teacher education, special education, physical education, civic education, education that focuses on morals, that which focuses on culture, and the various sorts of non-formal and informal education.
