Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her Grey Lynn apartment to one of New Zealand’s most historic homesteads and horse studs, this is an inspirational journey from a corporate life working with Louis Vuitton back to the golden hills of rural Wairarapa. It’s the middle of the night and Angela lies awake asking herself, not for the first time, why she gave up her glamorous job in the city, immersed in a world of luxury designer labels, high fashion and cocktail parties. In High Street to Homestead Angela musters the courage to change direction, giving up her home in the city to re-discover what’s most important in life. It’s been said before that one can’t look to the future without looking at the past – but in some cases heritage can be a heavy burden, and digging up memories, a painful experience. Angela Williams’ great-great-great-grandfather is Henry Williams, famous for translating the Treaty of Waitangi into Maori. Her great-great- grandfather helped establish one of New Zealand’s largest sheep stations. While her great grandmother was a national champion golfer, Angela’s grandmother founded the famous Te Parae thoroughbred stud. And her mother was Miss New Zealand... But her family has also had its fair share of pain and hardship, something Angela knows about first-hand. With three children – Angela and her two older brothers – the Williams family of Te Parae face issues of succession many farming families will be familiar with. With the days of the vast sheep stations largely a thing of the past, and with so many rural homesteads being sold out of family ownership, there’s also the challenge of preserving an historic homestead for the next generation. Join Angela as talks herself down from the high branches of self-doubt, as she settles in to life in a glorious homestead, plans for its future, and grapples with one of her biggest rural addictions – horses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resilient Farm and Homestead is a manual for developing durable, beautiful, and highly functional human habitat systems fit to handle an age of rapid transition. Ben Falk is a land designer and site developer whose permaculture-research farm has drawn national attention. The site is a terraced paradise on a hillside in Vermont that would otherwise be overlooked by conventional farmers as unworthy farmland. Falk's wide array of fruit trees, rice paddies (relatively unheard of in the Northeast), ducks, nuts, and earth-inspired buildings is a hopeful image for the future of regenerative agriculture and modern homesteading. The book covers nearly every strategy Falk and his team have been testing at the Whole Systems Research Farm over the past decade, as well as experiments from other sites Falk has designed through his off-farm consulting business. The book includes detailed information on earthworks; gravity-fed water systems; species composition; the site-design process; site management; fuelwood hedge production and processing; human health and nutrient-dense production strategies; rapid topsoil formation and remineralization; agroforestry/silvopasture/grazing; ecosystem services, especially regarding flood mitigation; fertility management; human labor and social-systems aspects; tools/equipment/appropriate technology; and much more, complete with gorgeous photography and detailed design drawings. The Resilient Farm and Homestead is more than just a book of tricks and techniques for regenerative site development, but offers actual working results in living within complex farm-ecosystems based on research from the "great thinkers" in permaculture, and presents a viable home-scale model for an intentional food-producing ecosystem in cold climates, and beyond. Inspiring to would-be homesteaders everywhere, but especially for those who find themselves with "unlikely" farming land, Falk is an inspiration in what can be done by imitating natural systems, and making the most of what we have by re-imagining what's possible. A gorgeous case study for the homestead of the future.

Book excerpt: High Street and Wesleyan University (founded in 1831) share a fascinating, intertwined history. From this major inland port on the Connecticut River, Middletown's sea captains and merchants made fortunes in the 18th and early 19th centuries trading with the West Indies, South America, and China. Others enjoyed wealth amassed from the local manufacture of swords, firearms, and marine hardware. These prominent families built fashionable villas of the latest architectural designs on High Street. Many of their homes remain, and two have been designated national historic landmarks. With spectacular views of the river valley below, its avenue of arching elms, and the addition of Wesleyan's formidable "Brownstone Row," the street has attracted many to the hill. Dignitaries, including George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, William Howard Taft, and Martin Luther King Jr., came to High Street.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belmont, originally the upper parish of Gilmanton, was laid out by proprietors in 1765. The first settlers began arriving before the beginning of the American Revolution. It was not until 1790 that Belmont Village was settled, when Joseph Fellows built the first sawmill and gristmill. Shortly thereafter, a store, blacksmith shop, and post office became the nucleus around which the village of Fellows Mills developed. In 1825, William Badger, who later became governor of New Hampshire, acquired the mills. In 1832, Badger was instrumental in building the brick cotton mill, which is today's Belmont Mill. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, this mill was the town's primary employer.

Book excerpt: The town of Malta, New York, lies in the near-center of Saratoga County with Saratoga Lake, Round Lake, and Little Round Lake bordering the community. While Malta has no rivers or mountains the land is gently rolling and several streams feed the lakes. Historically Malta was an agricultural community with small, independent farms that supplied food and shelter to support the families who lived on them. Three commodities raised as cash crops were potatoes, flax, and sheep. Two local granges and several churches met the social and religious needs of the area. Today most of the farms have disappeared and the construction of Interstate 87 made Malta ideal for residential communities and small business enterprises.
