Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School History of England IN the small space allowed me in this little book, I have tried to set before young readers a connected history of the rise and development of England. While giving as far as possible the chief facts required by students, I have been especially anxious to present a vivid picture of the life, the difficulties, and the achieve ments of our ancestors showing how our laws, our constitution, our trade, and our colonies have arisen. If this short sketch opens the way to the study of more comprehensive histories, leading those now growing up into citizens of a Widespread empire to take a lively interest in the past, present, and future of our nation, it will have done its work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario High School History of England Climate. - Father Ocean, it has been said, has a bias toward England. The in uence of the warm winds sweeping across the Atlantic to her shores brings a mild climate to latitudes that in America are Arctic. It is strange to think that London is in the same latitude as parts of Hudson Bay. England rarely has severe cold. The average difference of temperature between the warm est and the coldest months of the year is not more - than twenty-five degrees, and changes in the seasons are so slight that her people can live an outdoor life throughout the year. There is, for instance, no month when rowing ceases on the Thames or when frost wholly forbids plough ing. Winds are stronger and more rain falls in England than in the adjacent regions of the continent. Charles II, who had dwelt in many lands, said that the best climate was one which permitted men to be abroad with pleasure, or at least without trouble and inconvenience, for the most days of the year and the most hours of the day. This condition, he thought, vprevailed in England more than in any other country in Europe, and without doubt it has helped to make the English an active race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England This text-book is intended for college and high-school classes. Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. An introductory chapter and a series of narra tive paragraphs prefixed to other chapters are given with the object of correlating matters of economic and social history with other aspects of the life of the nation. My obligation and gratitude are due, as are those of all later students', to the group of scholars who have within our own time laid the foundations of the study of economic history, and whose names and books will be found referred to in the bibliographical paragraphs. At the same time, as it is necessary in school teaching that dates and facts should be firmly rooted in the memory, I have endeavoured, with the help of Messrs. Acland and Ransome's admirable Outlines, so to arrange the Table of Contents at the beginning of the volume that it may offer a clear abstract of the facts of each chapter, and also serve as a Chronological Table, giving the dates in their due succession. Among so many figures, both in the table and the text, there must inevitably be some errors in spite of every care. When any such are discovered, I shall be grateful to those who will point them out that they may be corrected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of English History From the Earliest Times: For Colleges and Schools It is seldom that any general view of a period is grasped by a learner. I have endeavoured to deal with this difficulty partly by care in the headings of books and chapters, partly by short summaries. The facts upon which these summaries are based are given in the fullest detail possible in the space to x hich the narrative is necessarily confined. Frequent reference has been made in the notes to authorities. This has been done not so much to support the statements in the text as with the hope that the reader may be induced to turn to the books thus brought to his notice. The rapid spread of the Free Library movement renders it probable that before long the greater number of them will be easily accessible to most students. I have not hesitated now and 'again to mention works of comparative rarity, for the benefit of those who, as in the city from which I write, possess the advantage of libraries of the highest class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School Atlas of English History The map of India in 1804 (no. 54) is taken from one published by the British Government. It is not in the library of the British Museum, but a copy is in the possession of Mr. S. J. Owen, who brought it to my notice, and there is another copy in the library of the House of Commons, from which, by permission of Mr. R. F. D. Palgrave, clerk of the House of Commons, 3. Reduced Oopy is here given. The system of colouring in the original map is, however, too complicated for school purposes, and I have therefore substituted for it the simmer colouring adopted in other maps of India in this volume. I have, however, retained the references as in the original map, for the sake of those who may not have access to the map as originally published. I have given to the British Museum library the tracing taken for me with the original colouring, so that it may be consulted there by those interested in the matter. For the battles of Bannockburn and. Agincourt (nos. 68 and 71) I have to thank Mr. C. W. 0. Oman, in whose' Art of War in the Middle Ages they originally appeared. The plan of the battle of Crecy has been entirely recast after consultation with Mr. Oman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
